Re: Do I need to pay BT the connection fee?

Note that the connection fee will be a lot lower if you have a BT phone socket (as opposed to NTL, etc.) in your property. This is because they then only have to reconnect you at the exchange, rather than install a new socket.

Re: The problem we all live with

Either the door is locked because the toilet is occupied, or the door is locked because the toilet is out of commission I suppose by knocking, you can confirm someone is in there, thereby avoiding waiting around like a numpty for several minutes while you figure out that no-one is actually in there...

Re: The problem we all live with

I believe this situation usually occurs when the person who is knocking is unsure whether the toilet is indeed occupied. My preferred response to this situation would probably be a polite, but questioning "Yes?" with the implication of "And you were wanting what, precisely?". Thi...

Re: Staff Redundancies in Modern Languages

I am not sure why you'd describe the University of Cumbria as a failing polytechnic. It might be failing but it is not a polytechnic. My apologies - slip of the fingers: "former" polytechnic (as one of its founder members was). Edit: Note that I have nothing against former polytechnics pe...

Re: Staff Redundancies in Modern Languages

These may well be the first in a larger wave of redundancies across the University, linked to the recently-announced cuts to the education budget. Not if you're referring to a Westminster announcement. Government funding for St Andrews comes from Holyrood, and even then that's less than 50% of the ...

Re: Where to buy a TV?

Is there some super secret place to buy cheap TVs in the UK, or is everywhere pretty much the same? Is Argos just as good as anywhere? http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer :P Or if you really do want the real deal, you can usually get cheap second hand ones from the listings in the back of newspapers (or b...

Re: Guest posters

is there a good reason why people can post as guests without actually creating a user account Yes, and I believe this argument has been around a few times before. The main reason is to allow folks - especially on the Advice board - to ask questions in anonymity. You know, the "My boyfriend jus...

Re: Cheap ways to get to London?

Given the price of tickets to Dundee, you could settle for a bus through to Edinburgh and then take the Megabus from there. It might be marginally too, given the Dundee megabus goes through Glasgow. I used to do the overnight run down to Manchester on a regular basis. Leave about midnight, get in ab...

I guess so. It can't take 2 hours to drive around central St. Andrews! Though South St. was done at 11:30am: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=market+street&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-a&ie=UTF8&hl=en&hq=&hnear=Market+St,+St+Andrews,+Fife+KY16,+United+Kingdom&layer=c&cbll=5...

Re: Well, St Andrews is on Street View at last

Most of the UK is now covered. About 95% of it, to be precise. If the images were taken on the same day, they were taken at reasonably different times: look at the difference in the weather to the west on the Market St and Double Dykes Rd side of the roundabout by the bus station. I notice the Unio...

Re: SSH Behind Resnet?

I can't remember which ports are blocked on ResNet (it's probably changed in the last few years anyway). You could always try setting up a VNC server and seeing if you can find an unblocked port. University IT Services tend to be pretty draconian about port blocking, though.

Re: Urgent: Local PC components?

You could try the physics skip, always old components in there. Looks like you've got one now, but Physics is usually looking to throw out old PSUs, etc. That's where I got my last one. You could try the lab technicians up there - go in the main entrance (if the building work is finished?) and go t...
