Re:

'Ulster' is one of the historic four provinces of Ireland. Th current province of Northern Ireland is based on six of the nine counties of Ulster. 'Ulster' is therfore often used to mean 'Northern Ireland'.

Re:

However irrational and non-post-modern it may be, some people still believe that a crime should result in a punishment. I can understand that in today's Britain such antiquated views are no longer tolerable among the new seat-sniffing politically correct smart set. The justice that would be served w...

Re:

It would'nt have to be tied to the UUP as such. It could simply be a 'Unionist Club', or something like that. As an aside, I think Trimble has done a reasonable job, and Northern Ireland is a better place now than it was before 1999 (excellent), albeit one in which some of the most depraved murderer...

Re:

The Conservative and Unionist party certainly has a membership that is supportive of the Union. But the Irish question is, quite correctly, only a small aspect of their political agenda given that they are party with UK-wide scope. A unionist club would focus on ulster unionist concerns. Also I'm no...

Re:

If the Conservative And Unionist party caters for Unionists why do they do so badly in NI elections? Anyway, a Unionist club would provide some light hearted relief for Ulster students who can't cope with the number of jolly oiarish wannabes from elsewhere in green rugby shirts! nothing more 'seriou...

Re:

Indeed they certainly are linked. But secular Unionism, if encouraged, is a good way to disengage the two. If a club was formed there might be elements within it who thought more about religion than secular politics and fairness, but I think they would be in a minority.

Re:

Exactly. My Unionism is not based on religion at all. It is a purely secular choice about what is good and bad, what is democratic and what is not.

A Unionist Club in St Andrews would obviously focus more closely on |Unionist issues than does the current Conservative Association.

Re:

Change is always good. Indeed. What a selfish world we have when everything is boiled down to the level of the individual. ANY chioce is equally valid, there are no limits (unless you want to be anti-P.C., in which case you will feel the beating of so many brows). As long as it serves the person - T...
