Re:

Well, if you were soaked in sweat regardless of whether you were jacketed or not, surely, out of consideration for the other ball-goers, you should have kept your jacket on? Taking it off doesn't stop the old perspiration, and leaving it on saves everyone else the sight of your damp oxters/spine. I ...

Re:

Yes, what's with the Welsh teefing it? My father used to sing it when he was at school in Cornwall, and I think there was an associated song which went something like "Oh, we'll all go back to Oggy-land, to Oggy-land, to Oggy-land, oh we'll all go back to Oggy-land, where they can't tell tissue-pape...

A rant

Wing collars. Why can so few people get them right? There are few things more painful than seeing someone wearing a shirt with a soft, attached wing collar which barely shows above the (usually pre-tied) tie, except for two points which are for too often unironed and sticking upwards (shudder). Wing...

Anyway, back to the topic in hand: striped shirts with cords?

Before you all rush out and buy mess jackets...

...make sure you also buy trews which have a high "fish-tail" back to them. There are few things worse than a billowing expanse of shirt showing between where the back of the waistcoat ends and the trousers begin, and a short mess jacket provides none of the discreet cloaking of the rear-waistband a...

Re:

I thought the "not a normal way to be" comment referred to the effeminate-gay accent, which is undoubtedly an affectation and therefore not "natural", rather than to homosexuality itself.

I'm rather sorry that you think that any discussion with me is pointless, LSQ.

Re:

I agree that a white tie may be worn with a Prince Charlie jacket as the Scotch equivalent of evening dress, but I would have thought one would surely wear a kilt rather than trews in a "white tie" situation. I'm aware many eminent persons in St Andrews have favoured the Prince Charlie jacket with t...

The wearing of a white tie with ...

Re:

Ladies' skirts may be made of tartan (though not, I think, the whole dress), but a tartan sash over an ordinary evening frock is the most usual way of displaying one's affiliation.
