The two reasons I don't use Thunderbird: - It doesn't allow two-line display of subject and sender - It crashes whenever I use it to search the University's LDAP directory Both of which can be done by the resource-hungry and slightly messy Windows Live Mail beta, and Outlook (which I don't have). If...
Quoting macgamer from 15:55, 11th Jun 2007 The Union website, is really difficult to use and doesn't have any useful information on it. The old one was ugly but functional. The search function should usually help you find what you're after, even if the page navigation on the left-hand side is (curr...
Well all I can say is: hooray! Good economics or not, I'll be fleeing Scotland debt-free and without having paid a penny for my education providing this all takes effect by 2009.

Quoting David Bean from 16:57, 3rd Jun 2007 No, the only thing any trade union can do is to ask its members to behave in a certain way, hence resolutions are technically non-binding on individuals In this case, surely sensible academics will simply choose to ignore the UCU's inane rantings and cont...
Am I right in thinking that this jump up to 4th place is a result of students being told by the University/Union to give St Andrews full marks in the satisfaction survey?
From University Court news, 4 May 2007: "Shootings at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University – this recent tragic event in the USA had accelerated plans at St Andrews to introduce an emergency system of text messaging to both students and staff, which would soon also be extended to Cour...
Quoting David Bean from 21:55, 1st Jun 2007 the students of St Andrews can't be left behind by bodies like the National Postgraduate Committee Well whatever action the SRC takes, it certainly can't proclaim to be speaking on behalf of postgraduates. There is currently no postgraduate representatati...
The academic calendar says honours classifications will be out by 9am on Saturday the 9th of June, which I presume means all the module results will be out by then too. Schools have a deadline of 1pm on Monday 4th to report module results to whoever it is they report them to (the registry, maybe?) s...
As legitimate as each of those are, I can't imagine how a text message would help (with the exception of contact numbers for people involved in international incidents). There simply isn't enough room in a text message to adequately explain these things, and some of them, though disturbing, would pe...
WTF? Under what circumstances would the University ever need to text us all to "give advice or instruction to aid personal safety". A hurricane? Or are they thinking of some sort of Virginia Tech scenario? That email was startlingly out of the blue.
Did you ever get it working? It times out when it tries to connect to the security gateway, which is odd since it always used to work when I used it a few months ago.
