Gay AND Catholic?

I've noticed that there is a surprising absence of a debate on The Sinner on the topic of extending civil marriage to same-sex couples. For a different perspective on the matter, Milo Yiannopoulos, a freelance journalist and writer for the Catholic Herald has appeared on 10 O'Clock Live and Newsnigh...

Re: Right-wingers are less intelligent...

My position on Macgamer's "views" are rather moot, as they are the views of the current infallible occupant of the Holy See (backed up by Aquinas). It is pointless trying to convince him of the error of his ways as you would need to resurrect Aquinas and convince him of his errors (or the...

Re: The burning of effigies...

How did you get to Marx from "left-wingers / liberals"? Do they equate to the same thing in your mind? Liberalism and social equality long predate Marx. If Jesus had accompanied Marx to the Manchester mills, he would have been in broad agreement that humans shouldn't be treated like that....

Re: The burning of effigies...

I'm not sure that you'd qualify as a fifth-columnist, but I think that counter-cultural and anti-establishment are hardly the right terms. You proclaim your membership and adherance to an organisation that has (or, rather, claims to have) a billion members, and you aren't exactly anti-establishment...

Re: The burning of effigies...

It is more than a little funny that you find "left-wingers / liberals" lacking in humour. Perhaps you haven't accounted for the black cloud that floats above your head that kills the humour in anyone who doesn't take their moral compass from a centuries-dead saint, with a questionable abi...

Re: The burning of effigies...

Macgamer: We should also have a discussion about why people holding certain points of view frequently profess physical symptoms associated with their point of view. Senethro feels physically sick when we talk about race, for instance. It's certainly worthy of psychoanalysis. I often wonder whether ...

Re: The burning of effigies...

" I'm offended by your comment." I'd like to open that line up and say what it really means: "a set of values and colloquial history which I subscribe to when it suits me has been maligned, and using this as an excuse to avoid further scrutiny and possibly losing the argument I'm goi...

Re: Singing at 2am near James Street

Were they burning any effigies at the time? Effigy burning + the singing of Jerusalem tends to indicate members of the student Conservative and Unionist Association. Since they have a high regard for Her Majesty, I'm sure that they'd be only too happy to cooperate with the officers of one of Her Con...

Re: London riots

Are you yawning at their actions, yawning at the suffering of all of those children... or just yawning at the fact that someone's mentioned it? If you pretend that bad things didn't happen, it doesn't mean that they didn't. I'm just yawning at another futile attempt to wind me up. I'm just as disgu...

Re: London riots

Some interesting analysis here: http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2011/aug/10/uk-riots-liberal-right-parent Tottenham MP David Lammy seems to have hit the nail on the head: In areas like mine, we know that 59% of black Caribbean children are looked after by a lone parent. There is none of the basic start...

Re: London riots

As for the bigger picture, I put it down to a lack of respect for authority. Whether "authority" deserves respect (at the moment) is a question worth asking. Absolutely it is about a lack of respect for authority, but also a lack of personal responsibility and awareness of consequences (f...

Re: Leuchars becoming Army Barracks?

You forget the draw that an entire town of young beautiful university age clunge will have on an a base of squadies! Your average soldier will spend his last pound on booze with the hope of getting laid, or if not into a fight, if it's not taken off him on pay day by MOD or his missus. Quite. Where...

Harigate: Sideshow to the journalism earthquake

In the journalistic mêlée concerning primarily News International / Corp another bizarre and intriguing story has become a sideshow - that of the implosion of Johann Hari's reputation.
