Re:

The use of stock fabric sounds perfectly reasonable to me!

Although, of course, the chance of my being mistaken for a schoolboy is rather slim.

Re:

Ties stocked in BESS would be an excellent idea.

Will they be the hybrid silk/ polyester? I trust so, since the silk of the graduate tie is godawful.

Re:

I have just discovered that a tie very similar to the UDS tie has been adopted by Lancing College as the tie for its Fives players.

I mention this only as it should be known, in case anyone gets accosted by a Lancing Fives player.

Re:

I take it that the Student Association tie is not the same as the Debates tie? I'll wait until BESS is up and running online to order the couple of ties I'm missing, but who should I get in touch with to order a Debates tie, which I gather is sold by the Debates officers directly? My email, by the w...

Re:

Well said!

Incidentally, which ties currently exist? The graduate tie, obviously, the Debates tie, and the St. Leonards tie in a truly awful polyester. Others?

Re:

exnihilio does have a good point about teh quality of the silk in the graduate ties--after a decade's use mine rather has teh quality of something my dogs have enjoyed playing with, especially in the "noose area" of the tie. I also agree that the current design should remain, no matter how awful it ...

Re:

Thanks, exnihilo and RJCovino, for your help. I must have missed the Debates tie somehow when I was around in the early nineties... But then, given my usual inebriated condition combined with my massive procrastination that's not too much of a surprise! Since I'm now exiled to Louisiana (as an ex-pa...

Ties Thanks!

Thanks, RJCorvino, for working to have BESS stock proper ties in proper materials--something that's been long overdue!

You wouldn't know what's happening with Debates ties, would you? Again, something ot available a decade ago when I was up!

Re:

Working on developing an undergrad. tie, or working on getting it produced in silk?

In either case, this is excellent news! I always thought that if anyone ran for a sab. position on the platform of having colleges ties produced in silk as well as that ghastly poly stuff, they'd get my vote!

Debates Ties

Clearly, I was unfortunate enough to be at St Andrews when debates ties were not as widely-used as they seem to be now... Although since being at St Andrews during such an unfortunate time is far better than being at any other institution at its most fortunate time, so I'm not too distressed. (Just ...

Re:

I would have thought that replaced the undergrad tie.

There is an undergraduate tie? Really? What does it look like? Is it different from the college ties? And is it available in silk, rather than polyester?

Re:

Frankly, I doubt that the university would be much impressed by letters, whether posted or emailed--or, for that matter, any other form of student protest. However, if people really are interested in retaining Hamilton as a university residence, then they'll have to find a way to convince the univer...

And the realy pathetic thing about it: that the Times, not the Daily Mail or some other junk tabloid by the Times, felt compelled to run an article on it.

REALLY? I'd very much like a copy of that! Which day was it published on, and in which section?

I think that EvilTwin and I are going to be generally in agrement, at least over how the debate concerning whether or not moral exists, and, if they do, whether or not thay are objectively or subjectively based. (I think they do exist, and are objectively based, just for the record!) However, I stil...

This is a response to EvilTwin and Andrew Cusack's debate over morality. It's intended more in the way of helping outline what exactly the debate is about, rather than adding a substantive contribution! I think that you're talking past each other, since you don't seem to be keeping apart three quite...

Re:

Do you actually get a medal? And what does it look like? Yes, you do actually get a medal! I think they all look pretty much the same, but with different inscriptions depending on year and subject (obviously). From what I remember, mine was bronze, had a rather old-fashioned picture of St. Andrew sp...
