Re:

Oh YES Toby! We are just DESPERATE to be members. You really have sprung us. We in no way look at them and laugh, and feel indignant that THEY have the wealth, the status and the power. Oh no. We'd all sell it all tomorrow to just be in the in-crowd. [hr] Some people are left-wing because they love ...

Quoting flarewearer from 21:32, 15th May 2005 This thread appears EVERY exam time, as does one for the Old Union Diner. Really the university should tell people where there exams are, not just an arbitary room name. Or else there should be a Sinner "find your exam hall" page.[hr] The uni does. Peop...

I have met people from all sorts of social and income backgrounds in my 5 years at St Andrews, and they have been spread throughout, and you know what, it really doesn't matter, you can't pigeonhole it. Well, you know what? So have I. And I've met two students from rich backgrounds that I would wan...

Quoting melkor from 18:48, 15th May 2005 Ok, so in which year did this £2000 thing start? 2001/2002? 2002/2003? 2001/02. At the same time as Scottish undergraduates started getting up to £2,000 in grant rather than loan if they came from low income backgrounds, although I imagine that applies to ab...

Cost of Graduation = Free. General Council - free, perk of having been VPR Graduate Endowment - free, perk of having started 2000/01 when they'd actually abolished fees without having got around to setting the replacement All the rest - free, perk of hating this town and graduating in abstentia [hr]...

Re:

Quoting Rufus from 11:08, 15th May 2005 But the very fact that having our tuition fees paid for by the SAAS is held up as some sort of moral triumph by our feckless pointless politicians, I think the term you're looking for there isn't "politicians", it's actually LIB DEMS. For information's sake, the non-assessed loan fell to c£830 (750 originally) in 2001 with the new Scottish scheme so as to fund the increased expenditure on those who do undertake parental assessment and come from lower income backgrounds, who are now eligible to receive up to c. £2,200(ish) of thei...

Those who are most unwilling to pay to support the poor and unemployed generally don't seem to realise that the dole (aka job-seekers allowance) is just £55/week. Try living on that ad infinitum. I'm sure such people are just rolling in luxury. Personally, I'd rather see unemployed people not starve...

The 'Who Should You Vote For?' test has now been updated to actually take account for Scotland existing. You might want to look at it if you're going to vote north of the border:

I think your student debt figures are bollocks, and targeted at a student from a middle-income family background. Especially if you want to increase the amount that can be borrowed - I remember your policy was to £5,000 in 2001. I admit I accidentally calculated on a four-year basis, but I assume th...

Presumably they mean the public universities, which do charge c. $6,000 at most. Or they actually consider the spits of financial aid the private universities give out of charity as part of the total. Or maybe the total subsidy compares, but with a profile that tends towards far less subsidy at the ...

University cheaper? Bullshit. I was starting to respect the Tories in the higher education sphere until they unveiled this policy. At present, as a student supported by the full loan each year, I have a debt to the student loans company of around £16,000. I am from the income background which 'widen...
