Re:

"Tradition is good" -I've never understood this sentiment. Good traditions are good, bad traditions are bad. Something being a tradition has nothing to do with its value. Humanity moves forward by rejecting what is old: traditions, superstitions, whatever. I can't even remember which name is for whi...

Re:

I was wondering that. Its ridiculous. Obviously some traditional names are offensive and shouldn't be used. Obviously some aren't offensive. The 'paki shop' is traditional, no?

Quoting exnihilo from 12:37, 8th May 2008 Worse still is a tendency to talk in stereotypes and generalisations and to have a monumental chip on one's shoulder about wealth - because nobody who isn't rich was ever annoying in the library. Stop it. Totally. Everyone knows that most of the loud people...

Not impressed with the Dolls House when I went there. Actually the best meal I've ever had in St Andrews was in Naahm Jimm's.

Re:

Right, so the bbc has run a story about something that doubtless thousands of people wouldn't know anything about and this is a bad thing how? I mean, why report on anything when those in the know figured it out ages ago anyway? I'm very cynical about cynicism. [hr] "I said farewell honey, I'll see ...

Re:

Actually, a serious point. Agreeing that people have the right to cause offence isn't the same as agreeing not to be offended with anything that anyone ever says. The latter is ridiculous.

Re:

At the may dip a member of the KK informed me that the houses in albany were 'hovels for commoners'. In his defence, he was drunk, and he is pretty much right. And its very hard to offend me. But I could imagine someone who wasn't me taking offence. So just to put that out there. [hr] "I said farewe...

Re:

Right, people do realise that the Charlie Brooker article isn't meant to be a 'serious piece of political journalism'? He's a comedian. I don't think Charlie Brooker has ever claimed to possess an 'informed political opinion'. He just hates Tories and makes Guardian readers, like me, laugh. Think of...

If I lived in London I'd be terrified. I should care, but I find it hard to be bothered about how badly Labour did. They don't deserve any better.

Re:

I think physicists must be masochists. Every one I know gets horrible exam timetables every single year. I'm glad I stopped being one. For all those unhappy, the guy in charge of exams for Maths said the departments can't do a thing unless the students start making complaints. Apparently the entire ...

Re:

I think what P.Davies is saying makes a lot of sense. The idea of laws really only being local by-laws: this was something I've alluded to. I think that once we stop thinking of laws as absolute, eternal, immutable etc the connection with God becomes less obvious. Regardless, its a fascinating debat...

Good. Maybe losing an election will wake Labour up, its not like the Conservatives will be much worse. This is coming from someone who is basically a socialist.

Privatisation seems like a dangerous road to go down. Its hard enough to afford studying here as it is! I don't get the argument that the makeup of the university wouldn't change. Just how many scholarships would be handed out? How do you differentiate between applicants when so many will have 5 A's...

Re:

What is physical law? I suppose I'm well aware that physical laws are rather complicated things, so I suppose it was maybe an unfair question. Its a term people seem to use without really thinking about it. I suppose it is the status of them I'm really interested in. What is the ontological status ...

Re:

This entire argument really seems to be very philosophically flawed. Humphrey is claiming, essentially, that we need some kind of explanation for the goldilocks enigma. We need to explain why the universe is 'just right'. Now, lets consider what has been put on the table. We have a concept 'order' o...
