Re: Kevin Dunion - Who?

There's an extent to which you'll struggle to get big names if the letter asking them to come is couched in terms of the rector being a student activist*. How you describe the post will determine who you can get to stand for it, again it's a question of balance. But you're absolutely right about the...

Re: If you could change three things about the Union...

I couldn't agree with you more! I argued to have the Travel Service moved out of the building ten years ago, and it's still there. I also said it was nonsense that people wouldn't climb stairs, and that it was a terrible waste of space to have all that junk up there. Look where we are now!

Re: Kevin Dunion - Who?

Hundreds took Donald up on his offer. He was a working rector too, and a very hard working one at that. Equally a great many people came to me for Andrew's help when he was rector, and he did a great deal too. What I see now is rectors who are only glorified student officers, rather as our MPs have ...

Re: If you could change three things about the Union...

Two observations: 1) Officers have been told by staff for at least the last decade that there's no point doing much with rooms upstairs as students won't climb the stairs. It has always seemed to me that the middle floor could be made better use of, and the opposite end of the top floor from Venue 2...

Re: Mornington Crescent, Round 2

From Uxbridge to Perivale? That's either brilliant or moronic. Edgware Road, to open the game right back up surely? Or have I missed something?

Re: Mornington Crescent, Round 2

Crikey. That's an aggressive move for so early in the game. Reminiscent of a young Rushton before he went pro. Let's see if we can't calm things down a tad with a jaunt out along the Piccadilly ... Sudbury Town

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

I think you may need a short lesson in the role of an SRC rep, you're not a constituency MP, so blarting on about representative democracy is pointless.

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

The SRC's decision looks like jumping on a passing bandwagon. The Association has dealt with the KK for years, and agreed to being on the Procession committee precisely so the Procession was not seen solely as the preserve of one club but a tradition of the University and its students. Withdrawing f...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

Moreover, we have withdrawn our participation from the KK's procession committee. So you've withdrawn the SA's meddling from the procession, along with the precisely no support that was offered by the SA to the organisation of the procession? They'll be gutted. Elected members of the SA will be all...

Did I get the fatuous slogan wrong? My only defence is that they didn't have it when I were a lad.

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

They're excluded from being part of the super-society he's constructing, but they're clearly going to be part of its activities. My advice in this situation would be: don't affiliate. If you're having to struggle and fiddle to get affiliation, don't bother. It's not essential and plenty of clubs and...

Why exactly should societies which don't allow students to join be able to use the resources of the Students' Association?

I think she has to, but you're really not getting the point are you? She's not saying they can't exist or that they can't continue to be male only. She's saying that if they do they cannot have the support of the University. It's always frightfully boring when people say "you're really not get...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

As I say, it looks a lot like a soft target was picked so she can show how modern and right-on she is. Is this supposed to be a scintillating aperçu into university politics? I find it to be a superbly crass assertion. Why must we assume a Mandelsonian motive? Really, help me to understand this par...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

But you are happy with clubs which select on the basis of, say, intelligence (like Mensa) or on the basis of athletic ability? Why should one genetic quirk be an acceptable basis and not another? What happened to the right of free association? The idea that because it's not modern that means it is b...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

Obviously at present none of us have the full story but at the moment it rather looks like the Principal has made a decision on her own about a long-standing institution without having actually consulted anyone. Certainly she has the right to do that, but there will be fallout from it, perhaps not a...
