Re: University searching for a new Deputy Principal

The ad says "The University is seeking to appoint a Professor who will assume the post of Deputy Principal and Vice-Principal for Research". Thus one wouldn't *need* to be a professor beforehand; one would be appointed to that role. Although I agree that there probably aren't many qualifi...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

Hennessy, if you would like to opt out of membership of the Students' Association, I believe you can do this in writing. By opting out, you will no longer have access to any of the Students' Association's services (the stationery and clothing shop, the General Office and Print Shop, the Travel Serv...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

Besides, who even elected you? As far as I am concerned you have been a non-entity for the past three years and it will remain that way. What makes you think that you represent anyone in the student body? That's uncalled for. Many of us here disagree with Georgina on many things, including aspects ...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

I am not a man, nor do I have any desire to be one or act like one! (This point has already been brought up earlier, possibly by David Bean) I just want to make it very clear that I never said that I'm not a man, nor have any desire to be or act like one (some have maintained I manage not to do so ...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

Andrew, again I find myself at a loss to understand what you're arguing. One minute all all-male clubs are bad and there should be no exclusivity; the next it only matters if it's getting special treatment. Which is it? The second, I largely agree with, which is why I'm surprised that the statement ...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

Well, that still doesn't make any sense, does it? The university never treated any other student society as it did the KK, and it rarely treats most other groups in any way at all.

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

The same cannot be said for men and women who, in this day and age, should be encouraged to consider each other as equals on the basis of their sex. There is nothing the KK does that requires an all-male membership, that is simply it's policy. If we consider one of the objectives of the KK to invol...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

Huh? I object to “exclusive” clubs based on the gender of the person, as does most of modern society by the way, so it’s hardly a radical proposition. That's the second time on this thread that you've claimed a large number of people agreed with your opinion. Would you care to cite a source? I'm se...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

It doesn't exactly take a leap of logic to say that in the 21st century all male, elitist clubs = bad. Come on folks, we're supposed to be an enlightened bunch her on the east coast of Fife. Yes, but we're also supposed to be capable of keeping more than one notion in our heads at the same time, an...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

Georgina, thanks for that. Those are details that I think might usefully have been included in the statement, and only serve to demonstrate the need for clarification as to what the university's position actually is on this matter. But another important question then becomes, who else was consulted,...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

I found the Principal's email rather vague. What exactly does she mean by withdrawing university support? It could boil down to very little and doesn't necessarily mean Lower College Lawn will no longer be made available for balls, the quad for the procession, etc. I for one hope it doesn't affect ...

Re: The KK - Is this the end for our intrepid duo (and some)??!

This is a surprising and controversial announcement, which I shall be interested to follow as the story develops. My own view of the KK when I was at St Andrews was rather complex. Yes, I appreciated the arguments about elitism and discrimination – indeed the 1892 Society was run by friends of mine,...

Re: Watchmen

I very much enjoyed this film, and would like to see it again. I think what fascinated me most of all was the realism of its presentation of an alternative history, most of which could very well have happened. All right, so you can forget about Dr Manhattan, and Nixon would never have been elected t...

Re: SSC Broadcasting Officer.... It's Gotta Be....

Wait, have they finally made this into an elected position, then? Thank God for that! I was the one who designed the previous 'convenors' system, based on the requirements of the DoES and STAR at the time, and I never could stand it. Well done to everyone involved in democratising student broadcasts...

Re: Unsolicited, "Thank you for ordering X", letters.

Was reminded of this thread today as I came home to to find a card from CityLink reporting a missed delivery. Well, I'd schlepped over to their local office to pick something up the other week and I was blowed if I was doing that again, but I wasn't likely to be in any morning this week and I am exp...

Re: Luke Hodgman for SSC Music Officer!

May I say what a pleasure it is to see this position so hotly contested. Congratulations and good luck to all candidates; I hope that once the election is done, whoever wins you'll all come together in the interests of the thriving music scene in St Andrews and the wonderful work MusFund does to pro...

Re: The second-greatest living Briton

IRL? Have we met? I mean, in a town the size of St Andrews we're very likely to have met... but knowingly? I highly doubt it, especially considering I haven't been 'at' St Andrews for about two and a half years now, and you're clearly newer here than that. I meant, and I didn't think my meaning esp...

Re: Unsolicited, "Thank you for ordering X", letters.

I've had emails like this, where the intention seems to be either to con the user into emailing back confirming the validity of their email address which then becomes more valuable to spammers (hardly likely in the case of a letter, given that there are far easier ways to determine whether or not a ...

Re: TB

Probably not, but then if that's your concern, knowing their name wouldn't help a jot.

Having said that, the best thing would probably be for the student concerned voluntarily to waive his/her right to confidentiality on this point. It's not as though St Andrews is a primary school, after all.
