St A Webmail

Postby The dude on Mon Mar 29, 2004 2:10 pm

For the past couple days I havent been able to access Webmail At all. Im on the Maths Server and when trying to goto https://webmail.st-and.ac.uk all i get is a blue screen with a little window that says "A fatal error has occurred: could not connect to database for SQL SessionHandler ." then it has some code or something and "details have been logged for the admin."

Is anyone else having this problem? and if so whats going on and when will it be back up? if not what should i do...im at home now, should i email its with my hotmail? thanks
The dude

It was doing that for a couple of days but it's ok now and working again. I managed to check my emails on webmail today.

Although apparantly it will be down again next Monday for some essential maintainence.

Alternative to webmail

Postby Joesta on Tue Mar 30, 2004 1:05 am

Here's a work around, access you mail by using the Telnet service. You type into internet explorer, or any other browser that may work with remote applications, telnet://.st-andrews.ac.uk , where is purds, maths, gatty... Next enter your user name and password when asked. You'll end up comming to the normal prompt so type:

setup pine

and then

pine

follow the instructions in the program and then you can do all your mail functions. When quitin the terminal window type exit or quit and that should close the connection.

ITS has a help page available at: http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/ITS/

This may help until IT Services get their webmail working again.

Or, if you have your own computer, you could do the smart thing and set up a mail client, like Entourage or Mail. This means that your email is on your computer, and there is less risk of your account filling up too much.

Good idea, except using telnet is a work around incase you don't have your own computer or don't want it downloaded for whatever reason. Anyway, isn't it working yet?

No idea- I never use it.

Was just offering it as another option for someone with their own computer.
