I'd always go for bus and then train. There's a airport link bus that goes from right outside the airport to Waverley, 5 pounds return 3 pounds single. Then train from Waverley to Leuchars is about 8 pounds with a rail card. Then bus or taxi to St Andrews. Bus takes 25 mins, train takes an hour.

More like 2 hours in my experience :S
But it is a quite a bit cheaper, so it's a good option if you have the time and inclination.

Haymarket station is a bit closer to the airport, methinks, which should save you some money if you're taking a taxi. Also, it'll shave some pence off of the rail fare!

Same problem!

Does anyone know of any taxi companies that are not too too expensive.
I have a friend coming to visit as well, and i worry that putting them on the bus and the train is a bit intimidating. Any ideas?

I'd try this guy, Stuart, if I were you :) He's an independent taxi driver, but really friendly guy and charges pretty low compared to many other companies (certainly no more anyway). His number is 07753834433. You might need to try him a few times if you need to book in advance because he doesn't work 24-7, and if the phone's off, he's not working at that moment in time. But yeah, hope this helps :)

I thought it would be sort of scary, too, but apparently it is very easy. You just exit the airport through the doors near the car rental booths and the information desk. Then you walk straight, because that's where all the buses are, and it's like stall 17 or 18. Then you get on the bus and stay on it until the last stop. Then you get off the bus, cross the street, go down into the train station and buy a ticket to leuchars. and you can buy a bus ticket while you are buying the train ticket.

also, send standrewsdirect@yahoo.uk or whatever the UK extention for yahoo is, an email with the flight info. They organize group taxis. I used them to get down to the edinburgh airport. And you can go from the airport to st. andrews, of course.

couldn't be arsed reading the other replies to see if anyone said this, but

get the bus to edinburgh bus station. walk up the hill to waverly station. there's a well steep road just next to it, where all the buses park. get on the one that says 'airport'.

this is also useful if you ever find yourself at a gig in edinburgh and realise it's midnight and you have nowhre to stay. can't beat those airport seats. and the guy in costa gives you a free frappuchino if you tell him how stupid you are.

best of luck.
