How to get from here to london

Postby novium on Wed Nov 17, 2004 1:48 pm

I am flying home from heathrow aiport on december 18th, at 9:00 am. (so I have to be in london the day before, obviously).

Anyone have any ideas about the best way to get there? I've thought about trains, a flight from EDI, things like that. I don't know my way around london at all so I was hoping for something fairly simple. ANd also cheap. cheap is good. :)

if you're serious about cheap, i'd get a bus to glasgow (four quid) then a megabus to london. if you are prepared to go at ridiculous times you could get one for seven quid.

st andrews to london for just over a tenner isn't to be sniffed at, i think

no, although it probably takes all day?

There's a megabus from Dundee which is closer and it takes about 12 hrs (did a quick check for 17th and there's one still for £6). I think it stops near Victoria station in London so you can get probably get a rail/underground link to Heathrow. I'd check that tho.

By rail you have to first get to Leuchars rail station to get to London Kings X cross and it's usually over £40 for a return ticket in my experience, and takes about 6 hrs. Flights are quicker but usually more expensive towards christmas. I'd say get the bus if you want it cheap.

i'm willing to splurge, up to about 50 pounds total. (plus a night at a hotel).

My plane flies to munich before going back to san francisco (don't ask me why). So about 12 hours in economy class is preying heavily on my mind.

You could try asking @ the university travel service (1st floor of the union). They might be able to give you more of an idea.

Last semester I took the Express night bus from Dundee to London - do not do it! Sure, it's cheaper, but also freezing, with many crying children and a guy in front with loud beepy text messages! And really long:S

Dont do the bus thing!!!

I live in london and generally take the train home, if you book it far enough in advance you can get a return for £27 from leuchars to kings cross. Try www.trainline.com, or the uni travel service can book you tickets.

Either that or go by plane - there are some really cheap deals around, I got a single to edinburgh from heathrow for £30, try www.flybmi.com, then you might not need a night in a hotel?

Hope that was some help
