Gyms in St Andrews

Postby TM on Thu Dec 22, 2005 7:56 pm

I'd like to know about the gym(s) in St Andrews. Someone told me there are two? Can anyone tell me anything about what equipment they have (squatrack, cables...?), prices, which is better, etc.? I won't be in Scotland before February so I can't go check them out...

Thanks

Yes there are two main Gyms. Well, the Bay hotel and Old course hotel have gyms but they are very very expensive. Most students are members of the AU gym which is about £16 to join for a semester and a visit costs ~£1 but you can get a 10, 20 or 40 visit pass for better value. This gym gets very busy though but if you are an early riser it's pretty cool. This gym is beside University and New hall. The other gym (east sands) is on the other side of town (beside albany park) and is mainly a local gym. east sands gym has a swimming pool and spinning classes and the price is similar to that of au gym but i found the staff very unhelpful and unfriendly when i visited for an induction- i think it something to do with the fact that i was clearly not local. however, if you happen to live really close to either gym that may be the deciding factor.

They're both pretty similar. CV room with running, rowing, cycling machines etc...not as good as my gym at home but if you know what you need to do its fine. As for the Workshop, the free weights are ok and the resistence machines are limited but enough to give a full workout of all core muscle groups. main low point is the lack of machines, esp during rush hour times but thats something you can figure out when you get here.

Just to add. The gym at the Bay Hotel is great, as it includes a swimming pool, sauna and steam room, as well as all the gym equipment that they have in the other gyms.

And the Bay Hotel gym isn't THAT expensive to join. I can't remember what the actual figures are, but I think it's £175 joining fee plus £30 or £40 a month - it works out quite good value for money (compared to most gyms) if you get it at the start of your degree, but if you're only here for a semester (which I expect you are as you're only here from Feb) then I guess stick with the uni gym, even though it is shit, not enough equipment, and this new £16 fee (which I think has now increased) is a new fee, that has just been introduced in the last year for "no apparent reason" (I'm sure someone will suggest one)

Sport Centre Website

Postby tylermatts on Mon Jan 02, 2006 8:40 am

This is a link to the web page for the fitness centre. http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/sport/bodyworkshop.htm
It tells you all about the machines and you can even see a picture of the fitness rooms. If you go to http://www.st-and.ac.uk/sport you can see the website for the whole athletic centre, which gives you maps, lets you pay your membership fees online etc.
