MS word 2007

Postby DaftPunk on Tue Dec 02, 2008 4:59 pm

currently trying to put page numbers onto my dissertation
having trouble with this as i require to have roman numberals - i, ii, iii etc at the start and then ordinary numbers on the main body.
however word doesnt seem to be able to accept this and will only let me have the same format throughout - any ideas on how i can get around this?

thanks :)

Odd. Can you select the first section that needs to have Roman numerals, apply the numbering, and then select the rest and restart the numbering in Arabic? Or maybe inserting a section break between them will allow it to work.

Have two separate word documents - unless you have some kind of indexing and related stuff. If you have them both as sub-documents in a master document, does that also cause it to make the page numbering systems the same?

What you need to do is define a new section where the Arabic numerals are meant to start. To do this, go onto the page you want them to start, and press Alt-I, B (I'm not where it is in Office 2007, but the 2003 shortcut works), and choose "Continuous", and press OK. Then if you go to the footer on that page, you should be able to pick the "Format Page Numbers" item on the Page Number drop-down on the Design palette. Click "Start at", enter the page number you want proper numbering to start at, and press OK. It should then have separate numbering.

This page may help if you're still stuck.

i can't get it to work & i dont understand that website. i might try in a computer lab tomorrow where they have an earlier version of word otherwise i'll just have to have two documents. ugh, you'd think they'd make it easier not harder..

Not sure whether this is the same thing, but in the same box where you can manually insert a page break (Insert - Break, I think) there should be one for a break for a new section. You should be able to define individual headers and footers for each section. Hope that helps!
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once.
