library employment query

hi,

I was wondering if anybody could share any light on the following query.

I am currently looking at applying for a position to work at the University library. I have TWICE previously applied to work in the library but was not selected for an interview. I found out through the grapevine that the Library only employ postgraduates to work in the library ( Iam an undergraduate), although they never actually tell anybody this information as it is discriminatory to do this. It is obvious that they are not allowed to do this, and should I pursue further action if I do not get selected for an interview, because of my undergraduate status?

Do you know if any undergraduates have ever been employed in the library?? My guess would be NO.

My academic mother is a 3rd/4th year undergrad, and she is employed by the library...

i'm not trying to be mean but might it not just be that you don't have the experience that they're looking for?

also, do you know that there are jobs even available?

Jon Purcell told us once, in one of those library development input meetings, that they don't employ* undergraduates because they have found undergraduates to be 'unreliable'. This was as part of a response to why the library can't hire more staff to keep it open longer.

*Or perhaps, for legal reasons, 'prefer not to employ' -- I forget the exact wording.
