Sleeping...

Postby wilma05 on Tue Dec 06, 2005 3:14 am

Heya everybody, I know there have been threads like this is the past but I cant find them to check! I am having trouble sleeping at the moment and I dont know what to do about it! I have tried everything from listening to calming music before going to bed, reading dull books, doing things that me me tired through the day etc. but they arent working! I really dont want to take anything like nightol etc. because I'd rather sort this through other means. I get tired throughout the day but when I get to bed I cant sleep! Do people have things that they do to help them sleep better??

Are you getting enough exercise? Sometimes keeping active can help you sleep better.
Try going for a walk along the beach before you go to bed at night.
Alternatively chamomile tea and reading a good (but not exciting) book might help. Keep to a routine before going to bed and don't use your bed for studying etc.
Otherwise just pick up any social psychology book and that's pretty much guaranteed to send anyone to sleep ;)
If none of that works you should consider sleeping tablets (natural or not) - they're not nice to take but can get you back into the routine of sleeping regularly.

Lavender oil
Camomile tea
Cut down on/cut out caffeine
Don't eat too late at night
Don't watch TV or sit at the computer for about half an hour before going to bed
Hypnotherapy/relaxation tapes
Imagine all your muscles relaxing from the toes up when you're lying in your bed - this does actually help
Make sure your beds on a North/South alignment - this sounds weird, but it seems to work ...
Tell your brain that if it wants to zip around and think about things then that's fine, but it's on its' own, and you're not getting involved
Tell yourself that although you can't sleep, you're lying down in the dark, so at least your body has a chance to relax even if you can't actually sleep
Try not to worry about not sleeping - you can survive with surprisingly little

As you can probably guess, I've had insomnia on and off for the past five or six years. The above have all helped me a bit, but you may just have to get used to it.

I have the opposite problem, I sleep too much, and don't get up for lectures ever. Any advice?

yes...go to bed progressively later and later until you are waking up at 8.30 or 9 or whatever. That's what I did and it works.

Later or earlier? Earlier works for me. And put your alarm somewhere out of reach so that you HAVE to get up when it goes off.

Of course, if you go to bed earlier and earlier, you're likely to suffer from a mild self-induced insomnia, but that should cure itself.

If it doesn't (or if you need to knock four hours or so off your day), try going up the beach. Go all the way up and see the seals if the tide's going out. It'll take you an hour or two, but if you do that of an evening (and find someone to go with you, preferably!), it should help you go to sleep. A cup of something hot and non-caffinated should then do the trick if that doesn't. Personally, I find I sleep better in a cold room as well, but that makes getting up in the morning even more difficult!

...but then again, that is only my opinion.

I had sleeping trouble in my second year. The kind where I couldn't sleep til about 3 or 4am and then slept right through til late afternoon.

Regular exercise and diet totally fixed it.
Three square meals a day and 2 or 3 gym sessions per week and you should notice a difference in no time

The lavender oil tip is a good one, lavender is a natural way of making you feel sleepy and relaxed. Try having a bath before you go to bed and add a few drops of lavender essential oil (you can get it from boots) or just drop a few drops onto your pillow before you go to bed.
If youre not in hall you can use an oil burner to burn a couple of drops of the oil in some water, giving your room not only a nice smell but also one that will make you sleepy :)
All the other tips work too, get plenty of exercise and dont watch tv or use the computer for an hour before you try to sleep as they stimulate your mind.
You could also try relaxation techniques to clear your mind, if its thoughts that are keeping you awake all the time - i always imagine im on a tropical beach! If you concentrate on the waves and the sand, you'll forget all your other thoughts and be asleep before you know it :)
Hope all this helps, good luck - not being able to sleep is a real pain!
