Prints from Digital Images

Postby DrAlex on Mon Nov 20, 2006 5:38 pm

I need to get some prints made up from digital images that I've taken, but I need them to be bigger than average photos (12"x9" in most cases), and I don't want the quality to suffer in the printing process.

Anyone have experience with the various places around town that do this sort of thing?

I have always found Ian Joy to be very good at helping out with things like that, but have never asked that particular question of them. Would imagine he would know how to make them work.

I can't imagine 12x9" would manifest any quality problems, provided you took the photos at a decent resolution. Try Ian Joy as BeccaLydia says, or the Bute Photo Unit. I went there this afternoon in search of a solvent for removing perished camera light seals, but they didn't have any. The man there was very friendly and helpful though. Bute C36. D door is the best way to approach it, as I found after much wandering of the labyrinthine corridors of the Bute.

I know it's not somewhere from around town, but if you're willing to use an online service I've always found PhotoBox make pretty good quality prints from my digital pictures. High resolution pictures come out really well, and if you order before 4pm you get them the next day, plus they do a whole range of sizes.

I used the Reprographics office in Bute, and I am very happy with the results. I recommend it.

Except they don't do normal prints, so only go for large, hi-res imaging.

I thought as much. I was considering using them for printing my ordinary 35mm colour photos, but I wasn't sure if they did that kind of work. Boots are charging £6.99 for 36 colour exposures, which is horrific. Ian Joy Photographic quoted me £5.67 today. I expected them to be dearer. They were keen to remind me that their primary concern was quality, not expense. Which was what I expected really. I'll be going there instead of Boots from now on.

When I had about 200 prints done at Ian Joy (in b&w) they were amazing. They weren't happy with the colouring (too much blue) and insisted on redoing the whole lot - even though I was happy with the first lot. They also let me keep both sets for no extra charge.
Ian Joy are FAAABULOUS!!!
And I had a 20"x12" print done and it too was amazing...

I'd also like to recommend Ian Joy. Cheaper than Boots and far better service and the quality of their work is fantastic.
