Thunderbird

Postby Mehmsy on Thu Sep 20, 2007 8:58 pm

Has anyone else been having problems sending e-mail using Thunderbird since the Mail A, B, etc. servers were gotten rid of? I've been able to check my mail just fine, but sending it is a problem.

Any suggestions?

It shouldn't make a difference, as long as your outgoing server is set to mailhost.st-andrews.ac.uk. You'll also need to be connected to the VPN to send messages (but not to receive) when you're not hooked up to the University network.

I've been fiddling around with this for a while, but no luck. I think the problem is this VPN shenanigans -- how am I supposed to connect to it through Thunderbird? The configuration windows yield nothing. :(

Yeah, James is correct, you need to be on the network to send mails with mailhost. So if you're outside, i.e. on a home connection, you need to connect to the VPN before you check your mail, instructions are here: http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/staff/itsupport/Networksandsystems/VPN/#d.en.1388
I don't think it can be done directly by Thunderbird unless someone's written a plugin.

When I try to download this it only find 2 files - not the 13 it says on the website.

Anyone know why this is/what I can do about it?

Thanks

Depends on how you wish to do it. I have successfully used webmail with thunderbird in three ways now, in Halls (no faffage), through vpn, which is a ruddy nuisence, though as people have said already you only require to be signed into the vpn to send mail, and my current setup where I use gmails mailserver for sending all my mail, which means that I do not have to be signed into VPN. The last option is more fun to set up initially, but once you have got past that it works fine.

you don't have to use the vpn. Or at least, you didn't. Mine stopped being able to send mail when they changed it too. But I just arranged to have it forwarded to another account instead of trying to fix it, as I am graduating.

"If you use a commercial ISP or connect to the Internet from another University's network, and if you are using a POP client such as Eudora, note that although you can read your St Andrews mail you cannot use the St Andrews mail servers as your outgoing mail server."

That was written in May 2002. mailhost will not accept connections from outside st-and.ac.uk, even if you use SMTP authentication. Apparently they're implementing this, though don't hold your breath. If you're outside, you *do* have to use the VPN, or SARA.

I assure you, I used thunderbird from a non-university network connection with imap for a good portion of the year.

It looks like they've finally gotten around to updating the IT pages to reflect the change in the servers.

Well, sort of.

I'm talking about SMTP, not IMAP. Sending, not receiving.

yes, and I could send email as well as receive it.

What is it with this stuff? Every single time an issue like this comes up, a dozen people will pop up and say, "you can't do that..." well, you can, and I did, and so it's not like it never worked... it STOPPED WORKING. "you can't do that" is neither helpful nor correct.

On a different note, it is possible to set it up not using the university to send mail out:

this is not true - you DO NOT need to b on the VPN! your incoming server will be the same as always (mine is mailb.st-andrews.ac.uk) and your outgoing server should be mailhost.sst-andrews.ac.uk. this will work from anywhere in the world. srsl. i got mine set up in abt 5 mins and it worked fine from manchester (where i first did it).

2.0 still has some bugs tho, one is that copying msgs to the local sent folders doesn't work sometimes. use the server ones and u'll b fine

It's correct according to the documentation and personal experience. Outside st-and.ac.uk, I can't access mailhost or any of the actual servers for which it is an alias. I fail to see how Anonymous/b is able to.

Likewise, the St Andrews SMTP server has never been accessible outside of the St Andrews network for me. It's probably the case that novium and Anonymous/b had their ISP's SMTP server set up automatically in Thunderbird or something (imported from OE or something perhaps), as there should be no other reason why it would work.

The Computer Science outgoing mail server, incidentally, is accessible from outside of the network, but only if you authenticate against it. Aat least the secure one is, the SMTP server may not be.
