Unfair leasing practice

Postby Rosanna on Tue Mar 04, 2008 6:57 pm

Hello lovely Sinners!

I realise that this is probably pointless, but I have just experienced a very annoying incident and wanted to know if there's anything that can be done about it.

I live in a 2 bed flat owned by a private landlady, and a couple of friends of mine, (2 boys who will be going into 3rd year) said how much they would like to live here next year, so I gave them my landlady's telephone number so that they could express their interest. They were told that she had just offered it to two girls, but that she would keep their number in case it fell through.

knowing that these things often do fall through, and because they liked the flat so much, they held off signing for another flat which they could have had in case my landlady got back to them. This was 2 weeks ago, and since then 2 more sets of people have been round to view the flat. I informed them of this so they called her again- she still insisted it had already been leased. So today, 2 girls turn up asking to have a look at the flat, saying that they had spoken to my landlady who told them that the other 2 girls had indeed dropped out. They liked it and called her straight away as they left the flat.

I sent my landlady an email, asking her to confirm whether or not the flat was still on the market, and reminding her that she had promised my friends first refusal if anything went wrong. She replied, infuriatingly 'Thanks for your email. The flat has now been leased'.

I am so angry with her because my friends really wanted the flat and, I think, deserve it for having been so patient. She did not interview them or ask to see any of their references, so i feel as though the only thing on which she could have based her decision is the fact that they are boys and not girls, and somehow less clean or trustworthy.

Anyway, I know that it is her flat and she can basically give it to whoever she wants, but can they not complain on the basis that it is discriminatory? I am just so upset at the fact that someone could be so underhanded and blatantly unfair.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks
Rosanna

Unfortunately, being a cunt isn't a criminal offence. You probably would have a case for discrimination if you had any hard evidence, but what you seem to have so far is circumstantial at best.

Boys cause trouble. Have parties. Are genreally messier and louder. Well, Thats what old people think.
To be honest, why would you want to piss off the woman who, A: has your deposit, and B: will be responsible for a reference.
