In St Andrews for a Week - What to do

Hi there,

Through a stroke of luck I am going to be in St Andrews for a week and was wondering what else there is to do after seeing all the sights in St Andrews. Are there any tour operators that do tours to other places? (although the article on getting to Edinburgh was pretty helpful. I am not a student so won't pay student prices and I can't find the normal train/bus prices on the web. Any help would really be appreciated.

I go to traveline scotland for overall journey planning, and thetrainline.com will give you train prices. The journey to Edinburgh is quite nice, although sometimes a bit crowded, and it's a safe bet for plenty of big tourist attractions. There's plenty to see and do - are you particulary into history, music, theatre, art (modern or traditional?), gardens, the outdoors, or food? Will you have access to a car any of the time you are here? How generous is your budget?

If you want to spread your wings, then the trip to Oban on the West Coast would be lovely this time of year, and then even across the water to some of the islands. Even a day trip to Glasgow is only 2 hrs on the bus, so worth it to see the sights there.

If you want to go to Edinburgh from St Andrews, the cheapest way is by bus. Get the X60 or X58, and ask for a Fife Dayrider. It's £6 and covers you all day. The bus is pretty comfy too and has free wifi if that floats your boat.

The only downside with the bus is that it takes about 3.5 hours to get there. But it'll save you a good £10 on train fares.

3.5 hours??? Surely that is a bit of an exaggeration?

Well, the bus that goes via Anstruther is rumoured to take significantly longer than the other one (can't remember the numbers off the top of my head), and 3 or so hours sounds familiar. I personally take the train - OK, you have to get to Leuchars first, but that's easy enough and the 99 buses are pretty regular. Then the train just takes an hour to get to Edinburgh.

If you take the other Edinburgh bus, not the one that goes through Anstruther, then you will be in Edinburgh in just under/a little over 2 hours, depending on bridge traffic etc. The Anstruther bus goes on a tour of Fife and does indeed take about 3 and a half hours. Definately avoid any bus to Edinburgh that passes through Anstruther if time is an issue.

Hi everyone,

Thank you for all the tips. My budget is going to be pretty small, I am coming to the end of my working holiday visa so mostly the week is going to be funded by my savings which I should be taking home. I probably would have access to a car in the evenings. I am looking at Oban's tourism site and it looks reall good.

The bus to Edinburgh that you want is the X59 - that's the one that takes roughly 2 hours. The X58/60 takes around 3 hours, not 3 and a half, but it's still not worth taking considering you can get to Glasgow in 2 and a half hours by bus

If you want to visit Glasgow, a return ticket on the bus is £10.50 without a student discount.
