how do i transfer files from one computer to another?

i have tried file sharing but i don't think i'm doing it correctly.

i think i might take a direct approach and connect the two computers together..what kind of cable do i need for this? a cat5 cable? will the two computers 'acknowledge' each other if i connect them this way?

Obvious solution is to use a usb stick or external hard drive. Slightly more tricky but useful approach is to use a Ethernet crossover cable and get file sharing setup which I think is what you are trying to do. Sorry to be lazy but setting this up is slightly different on each OS so google is your friend.
