Laptop insurance

Postby Tlomiew on Tue Sep 08, 2009 8:47 pm

I'm looking into getting insurance on my laptop but for all I know half the results that come up on a general search are scams, none of the sites seem to reference much but themselves( it dosn't seem to be a market the big insurers have much interest in). Could anybody recommend a reputable company?

Endsleigh are an established company, and have a reputation for taking on student insurance, when few other companies do. (Check your fine print if you go somewhere else, since student residences are often not covered!)

That's the best I can do, and I really don't recommend them. But asking for a reputable insurance company is kind of like asking for an Estate Agent with a soul.

If you are a first year in hall then your laptop is insured under the universities insurance when it is in your room and the door is locked. Otherwise look into your parent's home insurance that covers contents. It might be covered already under that.

Thanks for the advice, I think I may have found something in my wanderings, but this is really a terrible area.

Endsleigh are an...

Lots of students will reccommend Endsleigh, but I can guarantee that none of them will actually have made claims. Endsleigh are great at taking your money, but when something happens & you actually need to make a claim, they're useless.

I went with Endsleigh in my 1st year, as that was who everybody at uni went with. I opted to pay a bit more for their optional laptop insurance & I was glad I did when my laptop died. So I tried to make a claim. I went to UWA in my first year & there was an Endsleigh office in the Union - imagine my surprise when the lady behind the desk told me that the office only sold policies, it didn't handle claims. And then imagine my surprise when I spent no less than 5 hours on the phone to get through to their claims department.

When I finally did get through, I tried to tell them that the laptop wasn't in viable condition for repairing, but they insisted that I send it off to their technicians (a contracted third party in London) to confirm this. Cue 2 whole weeks of no laptop & no communication whatsoever until they could confirm what I had already told them. They finally sent me an email asking for an address to send the cheque to for the value I had stated for the laptop (minus a 10% 'handling fee').

For my 2nd, 3rd & now 4th years I have gone with Saxon (another company who do a student-targetted package) but I haven't made a claim with them yet so can't really report. I have had to call them twice to update my address though & they did actually answer their phones quickly, which is a lot more than can be said for Endsleigh!

If you are a first year in hall then your laptop is insured under the universities insurance when it is in your room and the door is locked.

I would look into this before trusting it. Many insurance policies will specifically exclude laptop computers because of how prone to damage/accidents they are. Depending on how expensive your laptop is as well, it may be over the maximum individual claim (there are often separate values for computers versus all other items).
