Are you able to come and have a look for yourself? I think that's probably the only way you'll know for sure whether it's right for you. It's a small place, but maybe you'll like that...personally I feel a bit claustrophobic in St Andrews at times, and the nightlife isn't that great, BUT Dundee is close by and easy to get to for clubbing and shopping. Even Edinburgh and Glasgow aren't too far away. I've just finished my first year, and found it pretty expensive here, particularly accommodation (I was in DRA), and so compared to friends at other unis I have spent a lot more than them. But if you're prepared for that, or money isn't a problem, then the cost of living might not be that big a deal to you.
In my first semester I wanted to transfer unis...hated the place in fact...but now I really do appreciate St Andrews, it's beautiful, and you get a uni experience that is so different to most people. I've realised how lucky I am to be here!
When you're deciding it really depends on what you want from your time at university...if you're after lots of people, great nightlife, and basically a bustling city life, then don't come here...on the other hand if you want to come to a place where you will see someone you know every time you walk down the street (and you WILL!), you're happy with quieter nihtlife, and you'll appreciate gorgeous scenery (like the beaches), then St Andrews is the place for you!
Hope this helps! Good luck with it all!
