Giraffe have technically broken up, but they're still together in spirit, and have been made almost famous by their quest to get played on radio 1.

I saw Kirsty Giraffe and Richard Giraffe on Friday, and they're both fine and dandy. WORKING for a living in the big cities of Edinburgh and London respectively.

live gigs

I totally agree.

All that the union seems to offer us in terms of entertainment is drinks promos and bops: events where you are responsible for making your own entertainment.

Quality live music shouldn't just be for Fresher's Week (weren't the Mull Historical Society the last band that we had at the union? And i think that it was only Space and So Solid Crew the year before.)

It's not like we're asking for the Foo Fighters or anything?

Get Nylon Pylon, Cousteau or even the Darkness; there's enough quality small bands that the union would be attractive to. Or you could aim big and see if you can snare a band on tour.

One thing that we do need is another Giraffe gig: St Andrews University's finest band now sadly departed.

This uni is literally crap for live music, is it so unusual to be interested in decent musiC? The yahs have their entertainment, but I personally wrench at the thought of wine and cheese evenings. Ahh, get some decent gigs or St.andys will lose what interesting people it has! A town with swarms of asses, what a nightmare!

Getting Bands in

Postby Rock 'n' Roll Star on Wed Apr 30, 2003 8:56 pm

I went to one gig last year - the band were crap and there was about 10 people there in Venue 1. It must have been embarrasing for the band cos i felt embarassed actually just watching. There's never going to be any well known bands play here other than Fresher's week, cos they cost too much and they have no need to play in a tiny venue in St.Andrews. Smaller bands from Dundee or Perth or Fife should be easier to attract, but still why would they want to come through and play in front of 10-20 people?? Especially when there are plenty of places in their home towns where they can play in front of much larger crowds, without travelling. If more bands are to be attracted, the union or the music societies have to come up with some kind of plan to get the place full, so that there is some incentive for bands to come. With most of St.Andrews students not particularly interested in music in any way this should be pretty tricky although EvilTwins ideas seem pretty reasonable.

Tibet Aid

Postby Morf on Sun May 18, 2003 4:40 pm

It can be done, we had 400+ two years running. YOu just need to make it a bit extra than simply a live gig. Getting bands who play original material isn't hard, but I agree that you might need to look to Dundee etc to find some real diversity.

like ive siad on the rocksoc live music thread, we're hopefully going to have around 150 people crammed into the beer bar next year, every other wednesday...

should be just as good as 400 in the whole of venue 1, and probably better as it's way more intimate.

With tables in Venue 1 400 was about the maximum we could get in. There are ways to fill up the space. Its always quite hard to judge the space of the dancefloor to the seating area. Many acts will not have anyone dancing.

It's all well and good saying there's not enough live music, but if no-one comes then it seems a bit silly putting them on. It's also rarther annoying from an Ents point of view, setting up for a band and then only 10 people turn up!

But the plan is that next year there will be more live bands in Venue 1, hopefully on the main stage. But if everyone could put forward suggestions as to who societies or the Union could get to come that'd be great.
Cheers

Is there any point to this thread? People are raising questions and suggestions but no-one from the union actually seems to be bothered about answering them.

Um,
again, if you read the rocksoc message board about live music you'll see what is planned for next year. We've been to speak to the union, and twis be confirmed soon hopefully... this is the plan:

Livesoc will be holding gigs every 2 weeks in the beer bar of venue one. And yes there should be enough people going to these to make it worth while, as long as the union actually SUPPORTS us when we put on the first one... ie, beer on tap, letting us put a poster outside the union, etc, so that people get to know about the event and want to come back. If theres only 30 people in the first one people won't want to come back. Proper advertising and not having to go to the main bar for beer = lots of people, and people wantign to come back.

If we don't get any help to get it going then it's not really surprising when we get 10 people is it?

And i think the whole of venue 1 thing is good, and it already exists in the form of tibet aid etc,... we're looking to fill the gap for small but packed gigs of a bit uh... louder/faster nature than tibet aid...

i stood and watched outside while talking to this year, and have seen the bands play elsewhere, and i think i went the year before that, but it didnt stick in my memory.

I dont know if this is in reference to my louder/faster comment. But if it is then i meant what i said. Louder, and in some cases faster.

NB. since most bands will play at the same volumes louder is in reference to the style of music, not the volume. Louder... as in Amen are louder than gomez.

If i'm mistaking your commetn then please correct me, it jjust wasnt very detained or explanatory :)

The aim was to get a diverse set of bands so that you can get a wide range of people in there. It would be really good if Rocksoc could work with us next year to get that louder/faster ending - If we got the right mix, I'm sure we could pack out Venue 1 with the right sort of advertising etc. I'm actually leaving this year but would really appreciate it if you guys could help those who are left. It was a good event - a few more ideas to improve it would be great. The only thing I would say would be that by going to Tibet Aid and being there you might have had a different experience. I know that you might not have like MSW, sidewinder or Hispona Sueza, but maybe we can bring in the 'louder, faster' stuff in conjungtion with a few slower bands and therefore make it accessible for a huge range of musical tastes? Maybe move it to a Thursday night in ragweek again and get it until 1am? We also had some pretty good equipment brought in for it this year (32 bit soundesk). What do you think?

Re:

yeah that sounds like a really good idea... originally i was simply saying that we were going to put on regular smaller more specifically rock gigs in the beer bar, as well as having tibet aid.

I know 2 of the members of mood swing whiskey, i have their cd, and they're a really good band, ...and so were sidewinder. Anyone who likes Phish has to be good :)
I totally agree with you that moving it to thursday and till 1am would be good, and if we got a bit of a heavier element in there (even just one band) it would definately increase the scope of tastes that it would cater for. ok that last sentence wasnt very good english. you know what i mean.

Who is it that runs tibet aid then? Cause i wouldnt mind helping or suggesting ideas, but i have no idea who runs it.

I ran it for the last two years - there is about 6 or 7 people who are on the committee for next year but they might well need some help. email me at mjjp and we could meet up before I leave.

if some bands can group together & help eachother out then there's a chance. when there's a support band it's far better for all concerned. persuade the asses off 1st years in September to do something too.

not forgetting X-Machina who did a pretty good job headlining the Union's last gig.

if we could get 2 or 3 of our bands doing well & playing the odd gig in this town then maybe some from Dundee'd risk coming over & support (or headline). of course we need to beat the student apathy & group together. if the band has electric guitars, get out & watch 'em.

[edited cause i fucked up. only read page 1 by mistake, the rest is still kind of relevant.]
