How special is your surname?

Postby Bonnie on Sat Apr 24, 2004 10:53 pm

Results from the 1990 US census.
http://www.census.gov/genealogy/names/dist.all.last
The last column is your rank and the second is the approximate percentage of the population who share your surname.
Can't figure out the third column.
Enjoy finding the embarassing ones.
(Go to Edit: Find and search that way, going through it one by one will be the biggest waste of your time.)

I'm 1147th! how impressive!

The third column is the cumulative frequency, according to this page, where you can also see the most popular first names:

The third column is culmantive (sp?) percentage of the population.

My surname was higher than I thought.
JOHN 0.010 45.311 1172

That's reseanably high for a name that causes people to go "no, I need your surname" :)

I guess if your name isn't there, then noone who filled in the census said they shared your name. Not necessarily does no one have it, but rather maybe people couldn't be arsed to be in the census. Sometimes people know they have not been counted but aren't bothered that it screws up something required by our constitution.

Yes, very strange. Byrne was right up top--- dad's family, scots-irish, no surprise--- but then mom's maiden surname was nowhere to be found. How odd.

So not that special then. Well it is a Scottish/Irish surname, so I guess I was expecting it to be high.

My surname's number 338. I feel so common.

My boyfriend's is 876- I was surprised since I always thought it was an odd one.

But surely ur name is more special if less people have it, cos more people means more common, & less special?
