Are you using some kind of Ned translation device Cain? Or are you fluent in Nedese?

I didn't use a translator, and when i was helping out at Buckhaven High (more students in special education than are filling in UCAS forms) I didn't have a chance with most of the kids, who spoke mainly without consonants.

i might have picked up a thing or two from them though.

besides, you should hear me when i've been at work for a week or two. i just go dead broad, ken?
[/i]
Worryingly i could read that perfectly well without having even having to slow down and look at it carefully :S

And once again, well done Humphrey!
[/i]

the reason you probably didn't have a problem with it is that it's basically broad scots - and therefore closer "to home" than the kind of stuff that is drilled into us and saw the obliteration of the way we spoke a while ago.

An obliteration that went along with the kind of snobbery and judging people by their accent that is so obvious throughout this frikkin' thread. Regardless of the money presumably spent to try and make potential St. Andrews University graduates more broadminded than in most walks of life.
"more students in special education than are filling in UCAS forms" - there's an implicit couple of tons of it in that phrase alone.

The kind of snobbery that persists not a million miles from here even tho' they have no problem sending their kids here if they can't scrape into "other" Universities. Especially if the Heir to the "English" throne is here. And here, by all accounts, because he didn't want to be around them himself. Seems like they've followed him here anyway. Poor guy.

Senga by the way is just the reverse spelling of Agnes and appeared years ago.

Here we go again, the PC squad strike once more- "oh, look you're making fun of a minority just because of the way they talk/dress etc." No, no we're not.

nothing PC squadish about it whatsoever.

Just a certain amount of disbelief that on a University website you see the biggest response to something that looks to demean others and, by implication, set some above a chosen group. And all on how they dress and talk.
Interesting that on the one hand we have this lip-curling, sneering contempt based on accent and spelling and meanwhile, along the Scores, we have an academic department that spends countless hours nodding sagely at the likes of Chaucer and Beowulf and its life-revealing mystery and artistry.
Scots have long had to put up with this kind of crap from elsewhere. I know of one student here from Glasgow who has been pressurised into changing her accent by her English flatmates who won't speak to her unless she talks "properly". Or should that be "prop'ly".

I could almost put up with that kind of crap if was emanating from an English university. But here, at this University? From a major proponent called Humphrey?

I find the way that "neds" talk is not the thing that makes them neds. Yes they have a broad and "uneducated" accent, but what's wrong with that? The only truly "educated" sounding accent is Received Pronunciation and nobody speaks that anymore, with maybe the exception of Brian Perkins and Charlotte Green on Radio 4.

What irritates most people about Neds and the point the webmaster of GlasgowSurvival.co.uk was trying to get across was the sheer antisocial and idiotic behaviour of these people. While there is an element of snobbery about all this, accent is not the facet worth mocking. Not all Neds come from Glasgaw, or indeed Scotland, any large city has more than its fair share of bored, drunk, anti-social, lazy young and not so young. Unfortunately because of certain government policies towards employment in Scotland, Scottish cities have become more identified with that sort of behaviour than English towns.

Bloody Tories. This has been a Party Political Broadcast on behalf of "I don't care if Michael Howard has new glasses or his cabinet seem nice, they're still the useless shower of bastards who helped fuck up this country for 17 years" Party.

It's not about the way they dress or talk for fuck sake! It's about the way they love to indulge in activities such as "pannin' Windies" "Chibbin' wee poofy pricks" and in general behaving like proper wankers that makes a NED a NED.

I like to wear trakkie bottoms sometimes, I talk like a right wee Derry scaff, but I'm not a NED because I don't enjoy fucking other people off for the sake of it.

Well said, becaue what ever people have against this group of people doesn't matter with relevance to this thread because this thread has been consistently about making fun of people for the way they talk, dress, or lack of internet skills - not the actions they talk because since when has someone's website been a reliable source of information.

Try doing the exact same thing about yahs and see what happens. Better yet look up the old threads about yahs where people have tried to make fun of them because of the way they talk and dress and have instead been cut off by a mass of users accusing people off childishness for making fun of those different from them.

Some people classed as neds are dangerous but how can you tell from a website - where is the evidence any of it is true? I have been badgered by people who look like neds in the past and those people I do not like. People I have never met I make no judgement on. Because not everyone who dresses like that is a thug. They might be from the same background, they might be poor and dress the same or drink the same stuff but that does not mean that they are automatically a thug. Talk about kangaroo court. By all means talk about how needish the ones that have attacked (verbally or phisically) you but ones you have never met? Grow up for goodness sake.

Riiight - so references to "hilarious alphabet sections" or "worryingly I can read that" or "do you use a translator" or "they seem to talk without using consonants" are just side issues rather than the real meat of it all - which is then not referred to at all.

Incidentally, why is it that it's relevant that we need to know that you "like to wear trakkie bottoms". You've just said it's nothing to do with how "they" dress but then suggest that somehow you're breaking into their realm by doing this.

Sorta like suggesting that anyone wearing a scarf in cold weather is trying to be a yah but can't afford a pachmina.

it's "like that" because there seems to be a suggestion that there is some sort of dress code that distinguishes people. And that "I wear trakkie bottoms" suggests a break from one code to another and is slumming it as a result.

The strange thing is that the billions spent on education every year is designed to produce broader minds than being so aware of what you're meant to wear once we hit this stage in the process.

Mind you, some of the disgusting views on the Mrs Ross thread suggests just how much work is going to be needed on that score before an apparently "new" breed of St. Andrews graduates is loosed on an unsuspecting world. From major contribiuter to the American Constitution to calling for the killing of an aging woman who has views. I've a feeling even the "low-lifes" of nedism would be pushed to come up with something like that.

Besides the obvious point (which is not that Neds deserve respect, but rather that you are entirely incapable of forming a coherent sentence in English,):
Would you prefer if we sent the Neds at Uni, getting educated, and "in charge?"

"Prime Minister Neddy MacNed called Jiang Zemin a 'poofy wee prick' today. China responded with a full-scale invasion of the isle of Wight."

Let neds be neds.

Cellar Bar, this thread isn't about a class war or snobbery. To suggest that we, as uni students, should be ABOVE criticising NEDs shows that you in fact are guilty of the classism you're moaning about. It's NEDs' anti-social behaviour that annoys people - the same way others annoy them by being "poofy pricks". NOT A CLASS WAR.

oh, nice one -
"Would you prefer if we sent the Neds at Uni, getting educated,..........."

"would you prefer if?
"we sent neds at Uni"?
"getting educated?"

sounds like some of the money obviously slipped by you.

It also sounds like you've already made up your mind as to who deserves the education - and it isn't them by the sounds of it. You'll need to enlighten us as to who you think does actually deserve the opportunity.

Incidentally, I don't suppose you will remember Bush's Press Conference when he pointed out that he had "been in touch with the Pakis..........."

But thanks for the grammatical corrections - I stand in awe of someone so obviously talented. It wasn't actually a choice I was offering - one rather than the other - but a hope that those minds would be broader than be so aware etc etc. But thanks for re-interpreting what I actually said.

You have to be one of the most pretentious, arrogant, egotistical wankers I have ever come across on this site, and there are many to choose from(normally I hate resorting to petty insults, but your staggering display of self righteousness and supposed intellectual superiority has actually left me blinded by rage)

And my reference to wearing trakkie bottoms was a reply to your previous whinge about people here judging others by what they wear and the way they talk, and how invalid a point it is here, you stupid twat.

read the post properly in the first place-that normally helps you make a valid argument instead of spurting out idiotic PC shite
