Guantanamo MUSTwatch

Postby Philip_J_Fry on Wed May 12, 2004 8:23 am

That Guantanamo Baywatch takes a while to load but its worth the wait.

The script is weird and dark but its quite funny.

Great Indiana Jones effects as well and opening titles are the best bit.

Any chance this wasn't shown because of recent events involving US military brutality?

computer geeks humour

Postby Jane on Wed May 12, 2004 9:55 am

As for "computer geek humour" I really don't know what to make of that. If it was the DDR on the beach bit, I don't understand how a game available to the entire student body in the union is "geek humour".

Kataochi says: explain yourself little sparrow.

Right I seem to have created a lot of controversy here don't I? Is it by any chance that the team who made Straight to Video are a little bit sore at not being included in the top 3 and at only winning a barrel of beer for their special effects, a barrel of beer which incidentally I think they deserved; the special effects were excellent and must have taken some time.
Computer geeks humour is 'Matrix' stylee humour which a lot of people find funny but I would say the majority of which are men (that is not to say all before you get all het up again everyone) Computer geek humour is a bit clique as only a certain type of person finds them funny and I would say that most computer geeks stay together. I don't wanna cause offence here but anyway I think most people would understand when I state that Straight to Video contained computer geek humour!

Sorry if this has already been asked but seeing as due to the technical problems on Monday my film didn't get shown anywhere, does anyone know what's happening about getting the dvds they mentioned at the end of the night as I'd really like my team at least to see it.

Computer geeks humour is 'Matrix' stylee humour which a lot of people find funny but I would say the majority of which are men (that is not to say all before you get all het up again everyone)

Apart from the fact that there is a very thin line between 'geek humour' and 'student humour' these days, the leader of the kung fu trailer is not a computer science geek, but a very sexy little girl. Not only that, there was one Matrix reference (the bullet-time) which didn't even get much notice.

Sorry to continue this debate, but I just wanted to get the facts across.

I'm sorry that the old style kung fu parody was not to your liking, I'll try and do better next time.

Killer Hamsters

Postby Tyler Fincher on Wed May 12, 2004 1:42 pm

I've noticed that not much has been said about the trophy winner of the night. I'd just like to say that it was an exceptional piece of work. It was a delight to watch, and seemlessly knitted together. And the music was good too.

Four Irons and a Wood

Postby random on Wed May 12, 2004 2:52 pm

Hi guys,

I've posted up a rip of our movie, "Four Irons and a Wood" - by Team 15.

http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~neomage/Vid ... ns_web.mov

The sound is crap, and the encoding is pretty crap in general. In fact, it's so crap, that you probably won't be able to make out certain key things such as text and beer cans... but it's the best we can do for now. See what you think...

Jeremiah - MMmm - wouldn't have to do with the fact that you were in the film about the guy being locked in - would it?

Thoughts:

Opening movie - really liked it, loved the costume department. Huzzah!

Girl in white dress - loved the fades, well deserved original music, and loved the floaty dress.

Sword in the Sand - thought this was very well acted and another that deserved the award it won (best drama). Only complaints would be the hum during it (camcorder plugged in while filming?) and the tone of the end didn't really seem to fit in with the rest of it. However, I did think the shadow deaths were very effective.

Running fellas - as someone said earlier, brilliant camera work.

My Friend Stu - thought it was alright but the intro felt a little too drawn out.

Waterfall - the single serving friend line just made me think of Fight Club. Sorry.

The Collector - wasn't terribly keen on this but more because I'm not particularly artistically minded. Probably didn't help that before all the movies were shown we got a screen shot of the dead girl, guess that sort of killed the ending (no pun intended).

Straight to Video - not commenting as in team. Huzzah for Helen!

4 years in 5 mins - if there was a best comedy award this year, then this should have won it. Great stuff.

The Last Broadcast - very good but couldn't help but think of 28 Days Later with this one. If nothing else, respect is due for being able to get up and film that early!!

Bully for You - alright but couldn't help but think that with the bit in the raisin the guy totally deserved it - wait your turn in the queue young man!

Killer Hamsters - bloody bloody brilliant! If only one film deserved to win an award then THIS was it. Original story, well filmed and bloody funny. Great stuff guys!

There was another film in the union that unfortunately due to the technical difficulties was tricky to make out, but it was the 3 students lost in the forest with lazer squirrel and the tesco value bread tree. I thought that was class in a glass - fantastic with the little moving giraffe.

That's my 2 cents/Euros/pennies. Personally I can't wait for the movies to go online so can actually see them all. Huzzah for everyone!

The Top Films

Postby my2cents on Wed May 12, 2004 5:34 pm

First of all, I agree with the person who told everyone to stop being such sore losers. There's no way to have people voting because otherwise everyone would just vote for their own and their friends' and then the winners would just end up being whoever got the most people to go and vote for their friends. ANd no offence, but it wouldnt be fair anyway because to get people to sit down and watch 65 videos would never happen. THe judges did a good job- perhaps some deserved to get up there that didn't but its a hard thing to sit and watch 65 videos- most of which were probably crap.

Secondly, all of the people who keep saying things about Straight to Video- honestly, the effects were good, that's why it was there, but it didn't flow. I honestly could not figure out what I was watching. There needed to be more clarity. And making three seperate trailers is kind of a cop out instead of finding an actual story and sticking to it. So all the 'computer geeks' or whatever who keep talking about this, seriously, it wasn't that great. Get over it.

As for the other movies- the poetry one was maybe the most pretentious video I've ever seen. The poetry was like trying to beat you in the head saying 'i'm deep! I swear!' And using the world trade center? Shameless. The girl in the white dress was ok, a bit overdone, but the music was good. Wish they had said before that it was original. The 4 years in 5 minutes was cute, but not as great as everyone's hyping it up to be. And a guy in a thong is just tasteless- are we really trying to just be crude? Sword in the Sand had good cinematography and cool sword-moves, but a little melodramatic. I thought if the guy had tried to be a bit more subtle it would have been better. And of course, that humming noise... My favorite of the top 9 was the Charlie Chaplin pie one. Could have started a bit better, but overall well done.

The top three- Last Broadcast was good, but a little too 28 days/Vanilla Sky to me. Could have been better. Bully for You I thought was great! Everyone's so up on how it was too sentimental or not enough students, but I thought it was just overall very very well done. Great editing, good music choices, clearly a ton of work put in by getting all the people involved. And the storyline worked and made sense- unlike most of the others that tried to be deep and were just confusing. It flowed, had a message, and was heartwarming. And no offence to the people who said 4 years in 5 minutes had the most audience cheering but this one clearly had the people's reaction. Everyone was awwing at the kid and cheering for the last minute of the movie. This was unarguably the audience favorite of the night. I also liked the hamster one- not as much as bully for you, but it was very good. Great effects, a cute idea, and very funny without being crude or over the top.

overall a very good night. Sorry for this being so long but I'm sick of all the people plugging their own video (especially guatanamo bay- come on people, if people want to see it online they will go. stop posting the link)

Straight to Video

Postby Guest on Wed May 12, 2004 5:34 pm

For those of you CONNECTED TO THE UNIVERSITY NETWORK, I've got a DivX copy of it Straight to Video at:

http://turret.dcs.st-andrews.ac.uk/imov ... 0Video.avi

If you attempt to access it outside of St. Andrews university, it will simply block yur access, so don't bother. I'll try to have an unrestricted version online soon.

Enjoy

Has anyone else put up their movie onto websites. I know the official ones coming soon, but I'm getting bored and impatient.

Sorry... more Straight to Video

Postby Tyler Fincher on Wed May 12, 2004 7:20 pm

I know the segmentation is a bit muddled, we had to edit the hell out of it to get it to fit. A 15 min version is under construction as we speak.

Hamsters

Postby Bread Roll on Wed May 12, 2004 11:22 pm

As part of the team that made the Killer Hamsters movie, I'd just like to say thanks to everyone for all their positive comments about our little movie. We had such a great time making it and the whole campusmovie thing was unutterably cool. As far as I could tell there were absolutely LOADS of fantastic movies out there and its a shame that not all of them were seen. Personnally I really enjoyed 4 years in 5 mins - genius and soooooo amusing.

So just really wanted to say well done to everyone and if you had as much fun as we did then it was all worth it anyway.

P.s. BIG UP Alex - Director, Genius.

Thanks for Straight to Video... I thought it was one of the best, and I keep noticing more about it now - the credits in particular, and the Tetris, Mortal Kombat and Final Fantasy 6 music during the kung fu film. Well done to all involved in that <¦-D

i will destroy roy

Postby gingerben on Thu May 13, 2004 12:37 pm

One film which surprisingly hasn't been mentioned yet (and which was shown neither at younger hall or the union) is the astounding destroy roy. This film has been an underground classic since its completion and was amazingly concieved, filmed and edited in one 24 hour period by a crack team of rogue artists fuelled only by the power of love. There have been rumours of censorship due to the film's graphic content but attempts are underway for the film to be made available online. A dubious individual calling himself only "Killjoy" is on the case.We shall keep you all informed concerning any new developments. - Team DR.
