So what's it like over summer?

Postby can i walk with you on Thu May 27, 2004 12:45 am

Due to lack of availability, my flight home isn't until the second week of June...I was wondering, what's it like in St Andrews over the summer? A lot of students? (A lot of tourists, I'm sure) Where do people go out? Is the Union bar closed?

The Union Bar will be open all summer, if memory serves me after 7.30pm.

the town itself becomes dead, as i recall last summer, for a while until near july time when all the american tourists come in.

if you are about in august, come see the lammas fair, south street and market street are closed off to a full funfair! its great.

There are quite a few students hanging around here I think - I for one am working here until July. Also, there are postgrads and 4th years waiting to graduate.. so I dont think the student population completely dies! I could be wrong I suppose seeing as ive never stayed here either. Wow i hadnt heard about that Lammas fair thing...

First, it's not completely dead over the summer. You have your tourists, golfers (difference), and still your fair share of students - mainly postgrads, as well as fourth years (until graduation) and a hefty amount of third years working in the town. I was here last year (for the summer between 2nd and 3rd year) and I had a great time. There's plenty to do (go play on the Himalayas - it's great!) but it's better if you know a few people around town.

Second, Lammas is evil. What started off as a mid-summer agricultural fayre has turned into the gaudiest mostronsity of a tourist trap ever. During the week of Lammas, the town gets invaded by hundreds of families, not to mention hundreds of Neds (sorry to stereotype and generalise, but it's true) and a lot of trouble hits the town. The fayre itself might be a break from the norm, but if you're unlucky (as a group of friends were last summer) then you could discover exactly what kind of unsavoury characters it attracts to the town.

I don't understand how the first three posts on what seems like a serious thread occurred between midnight and 4am...
