Pimms

Fantastic stuff, isn't it?
And quite the thing for this weather, too. If you can get a nice picnic rug by a river, you can drink it, get mildly battered, and think how great life really is.

I've been told there are three varieties, each with a different base alcohol - I think one's vodka?

Anyone clarify?

No. 1: gin
No. 2: Scotch
No. 3: brandy
No. 4: rum
No. 5: rye
No. 6: vodka.

I think only 1 and 6 are still in production.

I'm pretty sure you're right on that Anon. And only the most well-stocked bars and bottle shops seem to stock no. 6.

Without a doubt, one of the finest drinks yet divised by mankind, and the best value drink you can buy.

Summer in England would not be summer with pimms.

To properly enjoy it however, one has to drink it on a punt, riverbank, or next to a cricket pitch.

I think I've seen Number 4 in the shops not all that long ago......

It's a pleasant enough drink for a really hot day, I suppose. Of course, if you're seen drinking it, you'll be stereotyped up the wazoo.

I suspected that Anon. could be relied upon to furnish full information. Well done, sir.

Indeed, Mr Renouf is on the game, as usual.

Pimm's was invented in the 1840s, by the owner of an oyster bar in the City of London. James Pimm offered the tonic (which was a gin based drink containing quinine and a secret mixture of herbs) as an aid to digestion, and served it in a small tankard. This is where the "No. 1 Cup" moniker arose.

After the Second World War, Pimms extended their range, utilising a number of other spirits as bases for new "cups". No. 2 cup was based on Scotch, No. 3 employed brandy, No. 4 rum, No. 5 rye and No. 6 vodka. The only one of the variants still in production is the vodka cup, No. 6, although this is made in much smaller quantities than the original No. 1 cup.

And to make a proper pitcher of Pimms, try the following:

To make a 3.5 pints jug (just over two litres)

Liquid:
Pimms- 50 cl
Lemonade -150 cl
Gin- 15 cl

Fruit & Veg:
Apple-1 sliced
Orange- 1 sliced
Lemon- 1 sliced
Celery- 2 stick chopped finely
Cucumber- 10 slices quartered
Mint- 1 stalk

And add other friut as you see fit.
Corking.

I fear that I must disagree. Orange and lemon are not necessary, plums and strawberries most definatly are. Also I find that Celery just doesn't add anything.

The most important point about making jugs of pimms is that the fruit MUST go in before the ice, in order that the ice holds the fruit down.

Just orange and lemon is often known as bar pimms, on account of that fruit being more likely to be present in a bar. As the previous poster points out strawberries are vital for a proper pitcher. Not sure about plums though...
