DVD extras

Postby Slash wannabe on Tue Sep 07, 2004 12:20 pm

Do you just hate the extra "bonus" material you get with dvds sometimes? I have only seen one bonus extra that was worth watching ever...

Take American Pie the wedding for example. In the bonus bit you get deleted scenes. All they do is make you go "no wonder those scenes weren't in it, they were fucking shite!". It also pisses me off that some shops charge extra for the dvd with "bonus" material. Isnt the point of the bonus material being an extra ie it shouldn't cost you anymore cash?

I thought the point of bonus material was to sucker people into buying pretty much the same exact film again, just to get five minutes of the director going "yup - we fucked up here... and this is the scene we filmed after my wife left me." etc.

Or in the case of the Lord of the Rings to release 10,000 DIFFERENT VERSIONS to make as much money possible because there are people out there that are more than happy to think "hmm, even though I own, all 3 lotr films and all 3 special editions and all 3 super-ultra-hyper-thunder-zord-ninja-blade-crouching-tiger versions - maybe I should get the boxset of them too.

As to shops charging extra, you're legally allowed to stab them in the face if they do that. Considering DVDs are generally overpriced anyway.

Anyway, the moral of the story is dissolve your exs in a vat of acid.

The deleted scenes for Me, Myself, and Irene are good, but I can't think of many more. Gladiator maybe.

The prize for the most excessive and pointless special edition goes to... the Matrix. 10 DISK BOX SET!!! Totally pointless.

the phantom menace has a few good extras, and is a very well presented DVD (even if the deleted scenes and commentaries are appalling)

Dogma/Jay and silent bob have a tonne of deleted scenes that are usually too foul to put in the cinema, and they're really good dvds.

the worst ones i have are the untouchables (nothing of note) and face off (a trailer for pearl harbour)

The DVDs extras for Monty Python and the Holy Grail are rather good. I particularly like "subtitles for those who don't like the film".

as are the ones In Monty Python's life of Brian

but i do love the lego version of camelot" on Holy Grail.

most of the James Bond DVD's are pretty well constructed extras wise.

Trainspotting: The Definitive Edition DVD has a wonderful selection of extras, the deleted scenes are actually really good and there's a few decent documentaries in there as well. The new edition of Reservoir Dogs is also great for its selection.

The Band of Brothers Boxset extras are also class, but alas, no extra footage.

The thing that would sell it for me in buying a DVD of a film I liked is whether it has deleted scenes or not. My mind never seems to acknowledge the fact that they were deleted for a reason (e.g. they're shite)and I always hope I'll get something that adds to the value of the film. It rarely happens though.

dvd extras are useful for those aspiring to get into film and to understand the filmmaking process better. otherwise, its for fatass couch potatoes who have nothing better to do with their time.
