and when i say no apparent reason, i mean that although it does show something useful, its a point that could have been stated rather than presented in a fine take-away form, before anyone gets upset. i'm not detracting from the God

LONG LIVE THE ENEMY

Postby the-ally on Wed Nov 24, 2004 9:11 pm

I am the enemy's biggest fan! i'm glad he won kissability poll (other doesn't count), i know i voted for him! he's soooo daring, swooping into lectures unexpectedly and challenging olsen, who, lets be fair, is an amazing man! the consistency with which he can repel those epsilon balls! he should be knighted. but the enemy is my hero, i'm the kinda person who loves the underdog.

YOU'RE MY HERO!!!!

love

He came out with a couple of classics in Topics In Modern Analysis today:

"I showed the draft exam to Ken [Prof Falconer] and he said that he had to think about question three for a little while. I thought that question was very neat but I have taken his comments on board and made the question a little less challenging."

"One does not learn measure theory by reading about it, one learns measure theory by applying it to branches of mathematics. Similarly, one does not learn to use a hammer by reading a biography of hammers, one uses it to hammer nails into a plank of wood."

It appears there exists a homomorphism between mathematics and planks of wood...

dear superiorjames

mathshawk has been rather cruelly imprisoned in physics lecture theatre A for quite some time, the evil doers in the physics department have snatched me away to solve their complex problems,

i hope this correspondence reaches you as they are monitoring my communications, and i have sneakily accessed the wirless network whilst the guard is on his tea break

oh shit... got to go.

Mathshawk, so good to hear you are alive, i was beginning to fear the worst. I am working on a cunning stealth plan, whereby we come and rescue you from the clutches of the physics department. Those in the mathematical institute cannot afford to see such brains lost to a rival department. The plan is this...ze enemy will enter the physics department most unexpectedly and give them a tiny, tiny, small epsilon. As the department struggle to cope with such a development, i will send in a delta as for every epsilon there is a delta under continuity. As the epsilon continues (hence, this is where our continuity comes in) to fire tiny, tiny, small epsilons at the physics department delta will sneak around the back of the carnage and rescue you. From here you will be returned to the mathematical institute, where dr olsen will make sure you are well looked after. We will hopefully have you solving more sums very shortly indeed...

Until we arrive mathshawk, keep safe and do not convey our plan to others. Love and kisses and epsilons and deltas to thee

Nobody ever notice at the beginning of a term, when all the lecturers are giving the p2p speech. Olsen seems to never say the "2" in "p2p", which has always given me nightmares. "If you miss three or more tutorials we will remove your peepee". Oh noes.

may the god of pure maths bless this most righteous undertaking, and deliver us unto a better tomorrow. i hope he may assuage the anguish of those who have loved, and thought they had lost, our great hero, and watch over his future ventures.

praise be to Olsen, and long live MATHSHAWK

FIPS

Postby maz on Wed Dec 01, 2004 9:59 pm

how pointless is it that FIPS is going to badly"teach" us something thats not in the exam syllabus for the next 2 weeks, when I feel a lot of us could do with some "revision" of what we've done already - seeing as what we did today was the last stuff to be in the exam. He's a shockingly bad lecturer and his notes are really really hard to follow - couldn't work through some past exams or something seeing as so many of us "made such heavy weather" of what was a quite simple test. i'm so so goingn to fail that class if i only use his notes
argh! I hate differential equations
Well, I bet that you look good on the dancefloor :P

Go see my friend on his band's UK tour. 24 March - 7 April

he's been doing the course too long, as everything is now routine to him. the stuff he started today, although its not in the exam, will be really useful in the future, esp if you do applied maths. the jeffrey book is thorough for revision purposes, but i found it a bit dry. i think the way to look at his notes is to go through them, note down a couple of lines on each form of o.d.e./p.d.e. and then attempt his tut sheets / do the examples yourself. this is what i did for the class test and found it went quite well (at least before i get my mark back). the other option is if we all conspire to do spectacularly badly, and pray for favourable scaling...

I can't do differential equations either, I'm dreading my test result as I could only do question 2 so I'm expecting a mark between 1 and 5....It is without doubt the worst module I have ever taken and I thought nothing could beat Linear Maths and topics in groups... *sighs*

New Olsen Quote

Postby the-ally on Thu Dec 02, 2004 9:47 pm

Today, the perennial comedian Olsen presented the 2002-ers with an example class test before tomorrow's big assessment. He was quite clear that he was not cheating however, as:

"While this example test is not identical to the test you will all sit tomorrow, it is, shall we say, ISOMORPHIC to the class test you will all do tomorrow"

What a guy!

well it was ok, q2 on analysis was a toughie, but the algebra wasnt too bad, and the true false questions were good.
at the end of the day its only the class test

epsilons

Postby 5handicapgolfer on Mon Dec 06, 2004 8:18 pm

being a 2002 student i got used to the idea of epsilons coming in balls, but today the olsenator dropped the bomb of there being an EPSILON SAUSAGE!

i was giggling everytime he mentioned it, does any1 find it odd that it come in balls and sausages, is there an underlying sexual reference there?

Haha, thats a very interesting idea, im sure the olsenator was making a hidden reference of some kind, hes that kind of guy. Why not achieve a mix of maths and love in the same lecture? I think its a very nice touch, well observed 5handicapgolfer! Who are you by the way, we are all intrigued as to your identity in lectures. Where does thee sit?

identity?

Postby 5handicapgolfer on Wed Dec 08, 2004 4:18 pm

hey superiorjames
im unsure whether to unleash my identity, i think the sinner is a great way to talk to people at the uni that u may not ordinarily speak to, as there are no prejudices or social barriers, not saying i have them any more than others they are just built into our nature.
plus i dont know who u are! lol

lets just "enhance" our love for olsen on the net!
