Golf at the old course

Postby brown eyed girl on Mon Nov 15, 2004 8:41 pm

Was wondering if any could tell me how much it costs to play golf on the old course (adult and junior prices - any difference?). Also is there any student discount offered???

Not certain, but I think it is around 80 pounds in the summer and around 50 in winter season. I may be making this up, however. If you google St. Andrews Links Trust, they are in charge of the courses and may have the prices up as well. There is a significant discount for being a st. andrews student, and if you golf regularly, a much cheaper option is, to buy a student pass which is about 100 pounds and gives you endless golfing on the links for a year.

Do you play? I do, but am in my fourth year and have not yet ventured out on the old course. I feel its something that needs to be done once, so if you are lookoing for someone to play with, do get in touch!

looked at the website - but found it quite confusing - do you have to book months in advance to play on the old course? I don't play myself, but am thinking of buying my uncle and cousin a round of golf for Christmas - any ideas as to how to go about doing that??? Thanks!

call into the old course club house and ask them there in person - they can explain it all, with prices, and tell you availability.

a student links ticket will cost you a 110quid and gets you on to all the courses managed by the st andrews links( jube, new, old, eden, strath and balgove!)
to get that card you need to have a handicap of no more than 24, and be a student at st andrews university. to get the card take your handicp cerificate and cash down to pilmour house which is next to the eden course, opposite the practice range.
without one of these cards it will cost you 28 pounds (i think) for a single round on the old course as a student. 115 pounds if you´re just a random.

thats a lovely idea but i think you´ll find the R&A memebers will be both non-plussed to see you in the clubhouse (it´s the worlds oldest and probably most private, thus inhospitbale, clubhouse), and utterly useless when it comes to knowing anything about golf!

I think the Links Clubhouse was the one meant. Unless it was a prank.

If you do not want to get a links ticket and your purely doing this for someone else then the only way to get a time is to enter a ballot the day before. (They take all the people in a hat and whoever is pulled out of the hat gets a time). You can book times well in advance but I think this period is about a year. The cost is about £50 right now and they will be playin goff mats

From the Website:

Playing the Old Course:

Play in 2005
Nearly all the available tee-times on the Old Course have been allocated for 2005 except for a small number in April.

If you are hoping to play the Old Course next year, then the best alternative is to enter the ballot the day before you wish to play.

As the Open Championship is returning to St Andrews in 2005, the Old Course will be closed between 18 June and 18 July inclusive.

There are no single times available to pre-book in 2005. Single golfers wishing to play the Old Course in 2005 should go to the starter on the day and he will try to join the golfer with the first available 2 or 3 ball.

...

But all the other courses take bookings, I'm sure.
