I am not one who usually has much of a problem with how people dress or whatever, but I have to say I absolutely hate dreadlocks. I think they look horrible. I have no quarrel against the people who wear them. But I can't understand why anybody would want to do that to their hair. Ew *Shudder* It is one of my big pet-hates. I just don't think they suit anybody. I think they look scruffy, dirty and ugh, just horrible. But like I said, I am sure the people who have them think they are great and are nice people, but I just can't stand the look. Sorry.

Not sure if you're aware of it, but you can also get temporary dreads that braid into your hair. You just need to have hair that isn't rediculously long to begin with.

A site with pictures of this:

A trustworthy site to buy loose dreads to braid in yourself (or get a friend to do it):

And yes, I'm really pushing to get these instead of making the permanent choice. They look much much nicer, and if you get sick of them, well they only stay in your hair for 3 weeks or so, and after that you can either reuse them again, or buy new colours. Your hair will thank you!

I'm going to put dreads in my hair over the course of my PhD as it will really piss my mum off. They don't get minging if you take care of them and they suit the tramp look I'll be sporting for the next few years.

I rather like those really little neat braids if they are done well. It's the big fat fuzzy sausages I can't stand.

I'm not too bothered by the sort of Swampy/hippy/gypsy type rolled dread locks, but I hate the jordan/ned/bo derek style braids. a big ugg no-no.

I doubt that there is a single hairstyle in existence that everyone adores or that is unanimously detested . So really, who cares what other people think - if you can't please anyone else, please yourself. If I posted a thread about the short back and sides no doubt it would be shouted down as boring, even though it's the hairstyle that most blokes have. innit

PS

Dreads on girls = awesome in theory, but not if they're not taken care of properly, and I guess some people might not suit them.

Contrary to popular belief, for dreads to stay tight and look decent you have to wash them often, but not with shampoo, just with regular soap - shampoo leaves deposits that can have an adverse effect.
Backcombing is the best way for most people to get decent looking dreads, but it takes time to look decent and to get rid of them you have to cut your hair pretty short.

Some girls look good with dreads; others don't.

I suppose it depends on attitude
