The people moaning about us turning the golf off tonight

Postby Rectalprobe on Sun Apr 10, 2005 9:48 pm

Fuck off

We turned the golf off when we closed the bar, we dont have to leave it on after closing time, and the abuse we got both the first time we turned it off and the second (especially the girl who called me an arsehole - cheers babe) was utterly atrocious.

We asked our boss in offsales if you could have it on again, we didnt have t but we did, and got it on again untill she came thro. When she did we turned it off, as we said, but were huirled all the abuse as i have said. If this is the way we are gonna be treated after doing you guys a favour then you can fuck right off then now and kiss my fat hairy scottish arse!!! Next time you want something like that, say the last song on the dukebox or the last 5 minutes of a game etc. we will tell you to fuck right off, that we are closed and that you should drink up and go home to watch it!!!!!!

If anyone who was working tonight has nething to add to that then by all means do, but i think i have put it straight, which i believe in eing with people!

hmmm....

I don't know the situation... I was sensible enough to go to a nice place to watch the golf,... but I wonder was the golf advertised by the union on the billboards outside or elsewhere?

Cause I know once before it was and then it was turned off, and people got mad, and with every right. For a golfer akin to someone switching off your team leading in the football world cup final with 10 minutes left. Incredibly unprofessional if it's advertised, to not show the whole thing, since you're effectively attracting these people and taking their beer money because of it. I would demand some of my money back.

However if it wasn't advertised and was mearly on tv then they have every right to switch it off, even if it seems a little inconsiderate. If you're not going to show the whole thing you shouldn't leave it on and thereby implying to people that you are showing it (and hence getting money that would otherwise be spent elsewhere).

You can't just say fuck off you're tired and you want to go home, since you're doing a job and providing a service, and you have some level of responsiblitiy for not ripping off your customers (in most places anyway, not sure about the union).

and of course even if you're doing your best to keep it on, you can understand why people would get very angry, even if it wasn't your fault. You're a bar worker, they are drunk and have just been ripped off, what do you think would happen!

It's nice tho that you've got the internet to get it off your back :)

The way you responded to what happened last night makes the union sound incredibly unprofessional. As someone else said, switching the masters off before it's finished is akin to switching a cup final off 10 minutes before the end. I wasn't at the union last night, but after your response you have certainly encouraged me to go elsewhere to watch sport.

I don't see why you thought that it was your decision to make. Bar staff are there to work the bar. That's all. They are not there for any other reason and they certainly have no management role.

The union can lose it's late licence if people are still leaving the building after a period of 15 minutes after the bar bloses. RectalProbe in this instance was trying to encourage people leaving on time by turning the televisions off, thereby protecting everyone's best interest and ensuring the union doesn't lose its late licence.

I'd rather eat my own legs than watch golf on the television, and have always regarded the Dunvegan as a useful ghetto in that respect, but if the facts as presented here are accurate it seems this is a pretty open-and-shut case: it was closing time, hence the television was switched off. That's it. You can't moan about that.

They didn't make any effort to stop people playing pool after the bar closed so why should they have turned the TV's off?

You will find that it is our decision to make. We are the ones responsiblefor closing the bar, cleaning it and making sure (with the help of door staff) that all punters are out on time.

That involves telling people to leave, switchign off games machines and tvs, etc. so Ha!

And penfold, its the door staff who deal with the pool table situation - they go round and get everyone to play and finish their last games on the tables!

as i said, it was the union's decision to make, and especially with the license issue was the correct decision.

However showing a major world sporting event (and thus attracting people to watch it and making money from it) when you're not going to show the whole thing is completely wrong and frankly disgusting regardless of whether you think golf is boring.

The only thing I'd say is that if you go to the union what do you expect!

The point is that they can't show it in the bar after closing / drinking up time surely or they lose their license?

I'm not entirely sure the event was advertised, and was probably put on to appease the golf fans that had turned up.

For anyone who isn't very good at golf and has played it on a course being hurried up by people who are, this situation proves one universal truth.

Golfers are arrogant prick yobs.

Union shuts, telly goes off. Deal with it.

if a world famous sporting event is put on in the students union, people are going to expect it not to be cut short just before the end. If that had to happen then it either shouldnt have been on or there should be notices saying the end wont be shown.

That people would get annoyed was obvious, and the union just didn't bother thinking about it until it was time to close and they'd got their extra money that would have been spent elsewhere if they'd told people the end wouldn't be shown. Then they hide behind the rules, whereas the point isn't the rules, the point is that by not making it clear it was going to be cut off they misled people, and as an organisation that is taking peoples money that's just disgusting!

If people think that's a professional way to run a bar catering to students (in any town, not just the most famous golfing town in the world) then I guess you should be glad you've got the union. Most other people however will be less likely to come back.

The union has set closing times that are there for legal and business reasons. They have always been posted and my understanding is the routine is generally the same depending on the day of the week. Where was anybody mislead?
