computer help!

somehow some setting has been changed on my home PC and all I can access is the st andrews uni's web sites etc with internet explorer, this is on my home PC on our ADSL not on resnet or anything, but if I try to go to any site thats not part of st-andrews.ac.uk then it wont come up and I get a message like this:

ERROR
The requested URL could not be retrieved

the strange thing is that firefox etc will still work normally but I want IE back so can someone help me?

I got that as well for no readily apparent reason. I've somehow managed to fix it - I think by resetting my wireless modem/router.

However, I also know that calling up BT was a bitch because there were massive queues, so I am wondering if it was something to do with BT Broadband going phut for a while.

I'm on a wireless router thingy too so maybe unplugging it might help I cant log into it fromt this computer anyway

Try checking IE's proxy settings, Goto

Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings

Delete anything which has St Andrews in and leave the boxes blank.

If that doesn't help then maybe its worth checking the TCP/IP properties of your connection to see if old St Andrews settings have remained there.

I tried resetting the router and it fixed it, til I closed and re opneed explorer, and it wont work again, theres nothing in the proxy settings at all that says st andrews

also cant see anything unusual in tcp/ip

Did you properly reset it and then put all the settings back into order? I did the reset then was horrified when it wouldn't work but then realised that I had forgotten to put my username and password back into the router...

go into your interweb and network setting and delete anything that refers to st-and.ac.uk or st-andrews.ac.uk

I cant really see any st and stuff why would it only happen now after it working fine for so long?

David, i also had this for ages and it was driving me crazy. i went to the LAN settings and un-checked the box that said 'automatically detect settings'. that fixed the problem and i have now regained my sanity.

Internet Explorer seems to enjoy deciding to change your settings around by itself. I found myself checking the LAN Settings box every time things were going slowly on ResNet to see if it had decided to check that box again.

Switching to another browser (e.g. Firefox) will probably help you more than you can know.

I still have this problem after trying the suggestions above. I'm not trying to use IE (I'm a firefox user) but recently msn messenger has stopped connecting. Could this be related and how can I fix it?
