Decent hairdresser

Hi, I knowe there've been threads like this before, but was just wondering where the best hair dresser in st Andrews is

I'd go for Hugh Farquhar. they sit you down beforehand to show you different styles that you might like, and aren't too expensive either.

The best hairdresser in town is undoubtedly Sophie Butler. Personally, I would ask for an appointment with Kassi - she is amazing. Be prepared to pay for it, though.

kassi at sophie butler cuts my hair too. it seems to get more expensive eevry time i go back though, i suspect she has been gradually getiting promoted and is therefore allowed to charge more...

cheap and good do not generally go hand in hand, so if you wanna decent haircut then splash the cash...

Absolutely. Sophie B's is the place to go. Charlie Taylor's seems cold and clinical and WAY overpriced for what it is. Hugh Farquhar and John Alan have given me shit haircuts since I've been here, but I've had four different stylists at Sophie's in the last two years and each one has been great. It's not exactly cheap, but you certainly get what you pay for.

I find Charlie Taylor to be the best, although it does depend on who you get as one of their stylists has a tendancy to cut off too much. Hugh Farquhar is good styling for the money.

I had interesting experiences with sophie butler that involved a conversation in which the person tried to tell me my own personality and the time I had to spend on hair, ignored what I wanted, and made a horrible, chemical mistake that had to be grown out from the roots down. This was bad enough, but they burned me. Not in the normal 'water too hot' kind of way, but with chemicals. They burned through a portion of my hair, to my skin, Then through my skin, and actually took away some of the (whatever it is that's immediately under your skin on your head. Medical students will know better than me). And tried to tell me that was normal when I questioned theit technique. To add insult to injury, they charged me £75 for the pleasure of it all.

To be fair, once I'd left, had a think and come back to complain, they did...very little. Styled it twice in non-permanent blow-dry ways to see if that made it better, and sprayed Burneze on the wound. That would be burn spray that explicitly said on the tin that it wasn't to be used near the eyes, or on broken skin. Which would be because it contained nasty chemicals that irritate flesh wounds. And then didn't give me my money back.

I've heard loads of good things about their abilities, but when they mess up, they do it in a spectacular manner.

Thats very interesting because the last time i went to sophie butler's (at the start of term), the bitch tried to tell me that I had a severe case of dandruff. I was shocked and totally horrified. I couldnt believe it as I have always taken great care of my hair and scalp and would have noticed it straight away if i did have a problem! On top of that, she said my hair was terribly dry and that i needed some expensive conditioning treatment once a fortnight. I honestly believe that if i had either of these problems, I wouldnt have needed to pay £30 for some gabby stylist to tell me. On arriving home I insisted that my friend tell me the truth (and believe me, she can be blunt!) and to no surprise she said that i didnt have anything to worry about.
I will gladly take advice from a hairdresser that clearly knows what they are talking about, but when a stylist has never heard of Aussie shampoo (especially when she is Australian!!), that is when I reconsider going elsewhere.

I add my recommendations to those already expressed about Kassi at Sophie Butler. She's a great stylist who actually listens to what you want and a lovely girl to boot! My last style was totally at her suggestion and I really loved it - it was edgier than I would have thought to suggest myself but it totally worked. I need to get a recut pretty soon actually but from this thread it looks like she might be pretty well booked up. Eek!

you should try going to the charlie taylor training salons in elmwood college, cupar. yes you have to get a bus there but it does only cost £5 and there's alyways a helpful supervisor on hand should things go tits up! i went during the summer and they did a fantastic job...colours are only £20 aswell. (it also helps that the only ones allowed to cut your hair are in their last year of training)
