New Zealand: I don't know anything, how about you?

Postby raheli on Mon Nov 14, 2005 9:16 pm

I was offered a job in New Zealand. FANTASTIC, I instantly think, but really, I know nothing about the place except it has two islands and some kiwis. I actually sat down and wrote down everything I know about it, and it only came to two pages. Does anyone else know anything more useful than they filmed the Lord of the Rings there?

I hope it's the South Island, because the north is as boring as hell. I stayed in Auckland for four weeks in the summer and spent most of my time in the Casino. To be fair, it was winter there so the weather wasn't that great. Everyone told me that it was much better in the summer, but I have problems with a country that plays a Jimmy Nail song twice in one week on its main radio station.

The north of the north island, up at ninety mile beach, Kiataia, is really nice, but there is nothing to do there, but they have a great life. They go fishing and cook their catch on the beach and drink piss (that's what they say for drinking in general).

It is a nice place, but a bit backward, and a lot of people can be quite racist, which is unfortunate.

Go for a holiday first to see what you think.

New Zealand is one of the most stunning places I have been. Definitely worth going to. I suppose it could get slightly parochial but it depends how fast you want to lead life.. having been at St.A I doubt you would have much difficulty there. Go for it. The people I met there were so welcoming and hospitable, even the random Maoris my brother and I met in a rather dodgy town in an even dodgier pub one night. Try not to live in places like rotarua unless you like the smell of rotting eggs.

NZ is the best place I've ever been and I'd love to live there later in life! It's an absolutley stunning country around every corner there is an awesome view and the people there are unbelievably pleasant and welcoming. But like Sid said, the South Island is alot better than the North. It's more spectacular and I think there's more to be done there too. But having said that there are some really nice parts of the North Island.

If you don't want the job, I'll fight Yemminie for it!

I would put a picture on to show you what to expect, but I don't know how.

I was on the wrong side of the Tasman to tell you about NZ, but my girlfriend reckons it's the best place on Earth and I think she'd like to live there. My step-cousin comes from there as well, and she only has good things to say about it. My advice is get a Lonely Planet guide and read it. Cover to cover. Oh, and tell us which part of NZ you'd be working in too.

...but then again, that is only my opinion.

IM. SO. JEALOUS

The treachery of my former flatmate for getting to work there first!!
I went this summer for the lions tour so my view is slightly distorted as there were masses of people around, but the South Island is very beautiful and Wellington on the North Island is prettier and calmer than Auckland, which has more people.
I cant believe youre going, maybe i'll be joining you out there in a years time :D
