Dreadlocks

Postby onefinalstep on Mon Nov 21, 2005 9:15 pm

My question is simple... does anyone else in St Andrews have them?

I got my own shiny set of dreadlocks done a few weeks ago and love them to bits. They're soooo easy to clean (or not as the case may be) so I want to know anyone elses experience with them especially if they've had them for a while.

How can you ever sleep a wink at night
Pretending that everything is alright
And have the balls to blame this shit on me

Never in my life have I seen someone
So fucking blind to the damage he has done
You're the rotted root in the family tree
How can you ever sleep a wink at night
Pretending that everything is alright
And have the balls to blame this shit on me

Never in my life have I seen someone
So fucking blind to the damage he has done

Someone has to say it, white people who wear dreadlocks look like a/ australians b/ criminals or c/ both of the former

You don't get dreadlocks 'done' - dreadlocks are knotted tangled hair which take at least a year to lock and mature. You've probably got waxy salon twists which are not in fact dreadlocks.

I'd be interested to know who, if anyone, could give me a satisfactory explaination as to 'why'. In South Africa, if not the rest of the dreadlock wearing world, wearing them is a very specific statement against racism...

I thought it was a specific statement against washing your hair?

I'm planning on getting dreadlocks once my hair is long enough, I know two people with them, and think they look awesome

Posting stupid messages looks shit and makes you appear ignorant.

And no, flamewearer, its not a specific statement against washing your hair, that's the first I've heard about that. I wash my 'dreaded hair' 3 times a week and I've never had anything but positive comments from people.

Mine are backcombed, not salon twists. Although I can't resist playing with them so most of them are twisted anyway.

Must admit, I've never seen dreadlocks look good on anyone, and I've never seen anyone with them that I didn't think looked a shade unclean. Perhaps just a personal thing, but I suspect I'm in the majority.

Agreed.

Tangledpubes or whatever the name is, just feels bitter that everyone who hasn't commented on their hair thinks that rats may have made a nest in these glorious underwashed locks.

Tangledpubes? haha I don't think so. Tangled up in Blue is just the name of a Bob Dylan song I like, but don't get your knickers in a twist over it. And I actually said I'd never had anything BUT positive comments from people.

But its all good, whatever floats your boat :-)

Good for you onefinalstep, dreadlocks rock! I've had mine for a year and a half and I love em. Oh, and the chicks love them. Seriously
(if you're a bird then I'm sure the guys love them too)

For the ignorant fluff-head folks....I was them regularly, they're very clean and my hair doesn't drop out all over the bathroom.

Tangleduppubes is right though...you can't just go out and get them done. After back-combing, you'll have some pretty tangled hair, but it isn't knotted. A few washes with a lot of conditioner with leave you with a big fluffy mop on your head. It takes a good few months before you can stop the beeswax and a few more for them to tighten up nicely.

By the way, the best place to get any dreadhead kit or info is knottyboy.com The shampoo is highly recommended :)
And don't use anything with conditioner

Thanks Bobba

I thought about getting them done after I saw a girl in St Andrews with them done and liked them (she was cute too so I think that helped).

I took the elastics out this morning and rebackcombed them so they're looking a bit better. I use a pure soap shampoo anyeway (some of the aditives in normal shampoo irritate my skin) and the Body Shop bees wax is really good.

I don't use any of the kits but I'm gonna look into them as they seem like a good idea.

Yes, quite, what I said was refering to people who had not commented. I do not deny that people out there will like your hair, it is just that most people I know do not like dreadlocks.

I can see Bobba's point about the bathroom though, I hate hair blocked plug-holes.

Note: I never said they were unclean, I said they looked it. Which sentiment I stand by.

not strictly from st andrews ... but im through regular to see my gf ive met two other dreadheads (conrad??) when i was at a party

mines are 4 months in .. .and bar back combing there natural i dont put wax or stuff in them that just causes mildew and the smell that others mention .. the important thing is when u wash them make sure you get all the soap out of them

mines are quite short atm since my hair was just shoulderlength when i got them done so that they would be tight by the time they reached the length i want them in a year or twos time
