Jens Timmerman must be my favourite lecturer. He had some classic lines. Whenever a mobile phone rang he'd politely say, 'Please turn off your walkie-talkies.'

There was also the time in first year when he got really pissed off with students taking his handouts and leaving the lecture. He made a fake handout with irrelevant information and waited until all the escapees had left before issuing the rest of the class with the genuine one.

Haha I was on one of those that left the class with the fake handout - it was a 5pm lecture and he had such a boring monotone voice!! Although to add to that - do you remember, not only were the handouts fake but in the recommended further reading bit, he included: A Guide To Etiquette and Manners!

A very nice man and a genius but a very dull genius!

Jens is great once you get to know him. I've had drinks with him, dinner... He's one of the lecturers who really gets involved with his students outside classes.

Legend has it that on one exceptionally snowy winters morning Prof. Riches was one of the few staff to make it in on time, having cross-country skied all the way from Strathkinness.

That would have been Monday, 12 January 1987. During the day on Sunday, heavy snow and drifting in a steady easterly breeze had completely blocked the High Road at the east end of Strath, and the road would remain closed until a council JCB dug it out on the Thursday. I walked into town on the Tuesday afternoon, having already missed two days classes.

I had my first Jens Timmerman experience yesterday, and am looking forward to many more.

Speaking on plagiarism, he said that, as well as losing the good will of the department and all credits for courses, the very worst thing to happen is that you are forced to take a remedial SALTIRE course.

i cant remember the name, but i do remember a physics lecturer demonstrating angular momentum, with a swivel seat and weight.

was rather ammusing

[hr]

Prof Jack (J.F.)Allen was the originator of this demonstration. The lecture used to start ( in his flat Canadian accent and deadpan) "You have probably noticed that whenever you throw a cat out of the window it always lands on its feet" and finished with everyone filing out of the theatre with him still siting in the swivel chair keeping it turning without touching the floor. Some of Prof Allen's lectures, such as the low temperature physics ones ( his speciality ) were standing room only with half the Arts faculty present as well!

Latterly, I believe this has been taken up by Dr Bruce "Brucy-Baby" Sinclair, who also enjoys wearing rainbow jumpers when talking about spectra, passing out while breathing too much helium and making video recordings of driving past bagpipe players to demonstrate the Doppler Effect.

Mr Armitage from the Physics Dept. also, before his illness at least, could drink a half-yard of ale (1 1/4 pints in narrow flask with a bulb on the end) faster than any student. To give you an idea of how fast that is, my record was 7.7 seconds. Reputedly, he missed out on his PhD because someone submitted a thesis on the same subject just before he submitted his... life can be a bit of a bitch.

[hr]

...but then again, that is only my opinion.

I seem to remember Dr McGill doing the demonstration of angular momentum in my lectures - certainly entertaining as it was about the only demonstration we got in 2A!

a certain statistics lecturer last year wasn't too popular with some of the class. my mate wrote about how shite he thought stats was in the end of semester evaluations. in the union that evening, who does he see doing kareoke, but our lecturer. completely wasted. somehow, she ends up in conversation with my mate. lines like "so it was you who said stats was crap, i'll turn you over an spank you, you little bastard" and "i look better naked" were said during the discourse.

That is now a standing university joke since a paper went to the Teaching, Learning & Assessment Committee (TLA) discussing the punishments for plagiarism and included a recommendation that said punishments should include "referral to SALTIRE" for all cases.

I find that a little far-fetched. The man doesn't exactly have the physique of a gazelle.

Behind those milk-bottle glasses lurks a caged siberian tiger waiting to be unleashed in the snow. I had it on good authority from a number of long serving staff members, I believe this was many years back, however, when snow was snow and men were men.

d'ya mean to tell me that there's been nothing odd since 2006? I find that very hard to believe. Especially as I have memories from 2007 of being serenaded with snatches of old rock songs to illustrate ancient greek grammar.

Needless to say, we were stunned, and could only huddle under the covers.

Better than when I lived in DRA and was...ahem...appreciating some tasteful erotica on my own when a handyman with a skeleton key burst in without warning to change a light-bulb.
