Graduation June 2006

Postby harmless loony on Thu Mar 02, 2006 6:26 pm

Anyone else graduating this year and getting fed up of our inability to use the online system because of continual "technical errors"? We were supposed to register for graduation way back in January and every week it is delayed by another week - just checked now and it's changed from 3rd March to 7th March.

Also the graduation timetable hasn't been confirmed yet which makes booking a hotel/B+B a pain as with me being a joint hons student my graduation date could change..........why does this uni have constant issues with anything that has to be done online.......if you can't operate anything technological then stick to blummin pen and paper I say.......

*RANT OVER*

ps: I'm most prob only moaning cos I'm bored of working on my dissertation - but it had to be said....

We were supposed to do what now? I'm in my final year and haven't received anything saying I had to do anything.

I am now worried. :(

I thought I'd bump this, just in case you still haven't heard anything.

Last year, they made a bit of an old farce about packs/registering and what not... The only thing you can really do is keep hounding the registry as a collective until they get it sorted. I know my other half is a bit miffed that she can't REALLY book anything yet.

Alternatively, you might think of kidnapping Brian Lang and hold him for ranso... That's doomed from the start. Who'd pay to get him back?
So someone asked me "What is it you do?". I thought about it for a minute. Then I thought about it a little more. All the while I probably looked like I was staring in to space, struggling for an answer. And I was. There was only one response I could really give.

"I make sure the shit stays off the fan."

On the student portal there is a graduation link. Click on that and it will bring you to the graduation page - where there are various other links (inc the provisional dates). Underneath that there is supposed to be a link allowing you to register for graduation, however, this has not been working "due to technical difficulties" since January and therefore the date for registration keeps being put back.

The reason why they haven't told anyone about registration is simply because they've been unable to get the online application sorted - but no doubt once it is - you'll get a note through wed memos.

I assume the graduation pack is then sent to you after registration.

The student portal is still saying that: "Due to technical difficulties the On-Line application will not be available till 12:00pm on Tuesday 7th March 2006". As it is now Wednesday the 8th of March, are we set to be stuck in some Orwellian nightmare, unable to graduate because of the inability of the powers that be to work a computer? I think the The Saint should do an overdramatic front page exposé on the problems.

Actually, I think that at least a part of the delay is that this year's version of the graduation students survey has not yet been completed. Students are asked to fill this in when they register for graduation, so as it has not been completed, it can't go up yet.

The content for the survey is now complete, but there are just a few matters still to be decided. That is happening by email today and for the next few days.

So if things were/are still being finished up, why give a time and date as specific as they did last week? Surely it would have been better to say "we hope to have the online application available in week 5 or 6?"

thats what has been annoying me the most, that every time the deadline is changed they give a new very specific deadline which they then fail to meet, what is the point in giving a deadline if you dont reasonable expect to ba able to make it> I could belive that this was an unfortunate mistake the first time, but after having changed the deadline atleast 4 times, and it would seem more from what others are saying, i'm starting to get more than a little peeved, and have emailed the registry to tell them so, i urge you all to do the same.

Excuses of that nature are just ridiculous. It's like something a 10 year old would say as a way of not having their homeowrk in on time. I do not expect that kind of crapness from professionals.

But then again trying to access anything thast vaguely electronic in this univeristy is impossible. The printers in the library are always broken and if the uni are actually trying to 'process' something it takes about a year longer than it should.

children in creches have more aptitude than the people who work in this university. And they probably have better computing facilities.

Now we have to wait till Tuesday 14th March 12pm.

This is sheer incompetence - 3 months late in getting the graduation form up!!

If anyone submitted their essay or anything else required by the uni, 3 months late, they'd be threatened with all sorts.

It's so annoying that they appear to get away with this incompetence everytime.

The question has to be asked why it's taken so long for the student graduate survey to be completed - surely it's not rocket science?! There is obviously an existing format from previous years and I doubt there has been major changes from last year and yet someone somewhere is unable to get a simple job done on time. I thought we employed professionals at this uni, not a bunch amateurs. I have to say that is rather a pathetic excuse.

In addition, it's only gone and encouraged me to fill in the National Students Survey the Union were so keen for us to not fill in - I don't think the Uni's reputation should be inflated when it cannot even deal with simple bits of technology.

Email this twat:

principal@st-andrews.ac.uk

Maybe if he discovers they won't be getting all those lovely charges for graduation as quickly as they'd like, he might do something.

If the university is having technical problems with online graduation registration, why don't they just let us register the old fashioned way?

I emailed the registy to say how frustrating it was that the deadline kept being put back and ask if i could register in person or by post and was told that they are currently not considering other forms of application since it is a complicated process (got a bit scared at that) and given that there was still pleanty of time they didnt feel it was necissary.
