Update on AUT Action - Implications for Graduation

Postby Ben Reilly on Fri Apr 28, 2006 10:37 am

The University has announced its plans to ensure that no student will be stopped from graduating this summer due to the AUT action.

For the details, and all the latest info, see http://www.yourunion.net/autaction

Hey I couldn't get the link to work, could someone post a copy of the letter on here or let me know how I can view it.

Cheers!

Weird. If that's not working, go to the front page of the website http://www.yourunion.net/ and click on the AUT Action bit.

The AUT page is loading, but not the details of how it works. Don't suppose you could post it up here.

No substantial change then as far as medics are concerned, other than the graduation ceremony going ahead - as I understand it we have to pass the course (although I trust you have been investigating this Ben) to move to Manchester.

I'm beginning to think things will come to a head sooner rather than later.

Who gets this letter? I'm a fourth year and I've not had this letter posted or emailed to me by the principal. It would be nice to think that even if the university aren't able to do anything about the strike, they could at least sort their communications out.

And the very thought of them graduating us with an unclassified mock degree is an absolute Disgrace.

Cynical thought

Postby puzzled on Fri Apr 28, 2006 3:10 pm

I am alone in thinking that the university are offering this make-believe graduation ceremony so they dont start receiving demands to reimbuse 4th years for their already paid for hotels etc?

the idea that some unis are putting forward acccording to that link is that you get your degree based on your thrid year - thats utter pish, if thats the case they are just going to ignore a year of hard work and the possibility of perhaps raising your standard and final degree, its unbelievable

Not cynical at all. They are also worried about legal action which the lawyers have started to suggested to students could be forthcoming.

Oh, I just had a great idea. You know how the ceremony is full of pomp and tradition? Well, as we are presented to with our "mock" degrees we could each turn to the audience and announce, "this ladies and gentleman, is a farce" In a very polite and well mannered way. Then just walk off stage.

If everyone did it it would be amazing.

P.S. A friend just suggested we rip the degrees in half instead - even better.
