I'd be quite happy if a Marks and Spencers moved into town, that way maybe I wouldn't have to queue for half an hour to buy cigarettes while a bunch of wankers are buying a bottle of juice, one sandwich, a bar of chocolate and a paper, etc.

o rly? That's why there's coffee shops every fart's end, and St Andrews Health Food Shop, Holland & Barrett and Julian Graves all staring each other out across Market Street. St Andrews planning defies logic.

It does amuse me, that in the space of practically 2 weeks, St Andrews has trebled the numbers of health food shops.

Though, I'll still keep frying stuff in lard.

Unknown Pleasures is a superb music shop. It's eclectic, eccentric and has character. And it's cheap. You'll get surprised by the things that turn up, and you can have a human chat about music with the people who work there.

I can only assume what you want is the music equivalent of a supermarket, rather than a green-grocer.

Now that we're losing Quarto, though, a decent bookshop has got to be the biggest priority.

why do so many people seem keen to get a marks and spencers in town? granted, the food they sell is far better than tesco's but marks and spencers could hardly be considered cheap or even reasonably priced. ive always thought they were one of the most of expensive places to get food (after Morrisons anyway, Safeways were cheaper).

whoever said a bookshop, seconded but it wont happen. not with ottakers just across the street. :(

i actually said the food was good (better than tesco's). i know it's nice, but it's also damn expensive. i'd rather stick to eating slightly less nice food all year than eat great food for a month. :P

and as for value for money, i'm quite happy with the food available in the shops around town (Morrisons >> Tesco's :) ), going shopping in a more expensive shop would seem like a waste of money to me.

i wouldnt complain if one opened up though. it would at least make the queues in tesco's a bit shorter. :P

I'm afraid unknown pleasures, "nice" as it is, is not a good music shop. You actually find rarer stuff in Fopp in dundee. i've been in there a number of times, and their vinyl selection is intensely limited - it's all just appallingly poor condition second hand crap from the 70s that no-one in their right might would listen to these days. Bluenote, I think the name was, of the truly fantastic little second hand music shop that was on Argyle street. The guy gave away incence if he liked you. There was actual, desirable material in that place. You could get music that wasn't just "miscellaneous early 90's indie" or something from the £1 bucket.[/quote]

A Fopp would be awesome. Unknown Pleasures doesn't stock a great variety of music (especially if you're looking for some good punk, even some good rock bands aren't there) but it has been a while since I've been in, I gave up looking pretty quickly.

With a shop like Unknown Pleasures, perseverence is key, as is chatting to the staff so you know when the next delivery's coming in etc. At least you get a sense of achievement when you get something you really wanted.

I agree that the vinyl there is not so good. I guess the people wanting a "decent" record store are wanting an independent store like Avalanches in Edinburgh or Reflex in Newcastle, which sell a good variety of new and second hand music at fairly ok prices.

And what good is a green grocer for those who like meat?
I can only assume that because of your assumption that UP does not cater for me (or many, many others) that you think my taste in music is obviously less obscure/cool than yours so logically ==> Your a pretentious wanker

Unknown Pleasures is alright, but it's not as good as Bluenote was. Even if you didn't buy anything the guy there would still talk to you for ages.

While looking through the careers service folders the other day it said that Phones4U were setting up something in town. That might be where Semi-Chem is. As long as they don't bring along the tosser from the ads.

Now here's a rumour I heard. No idea if its true, but it could be interestring... apparently M&S has bought the Butchers shop on Market St, right next to where Semi-chem used to be - and also all the flats behind it too. If you look at the shop space that would make, is perhaps just the right size for a foodhall...

Could be just a scurrilous rumour though.

I for one would like to see an M&S foodhall but I'm not sure if its what we need most. Still we'll see what happens.

Edit: Plus, it would be a shame to lose a local business like the butchers to be replaced with a chain store.

We had this thought in another recent thread about what we needed in St Andrews, and if I remember correctly, someone said they had gone in to ask the buchers if it was true, and the butchers said they hadn't sold, nor would they.
