May Ball...........................Sounds more like the DISmay ball to me.

I have been to the May Ball the last 4 years and this years was great. I had loads of fun in 2003 and 2004, but last year was awful.

They did correct many of the problems that occurred last year, mainly with queueing times (though maybe this was just due to the lack of people...). I don't think I ever queued for more than a couple of minutes for a drink. I had to wait longer for food but I still ate loads (2 chicken wraps, a crepe, some burgers and loads of pain au chocolat). I didn't have to wait too long for the dodgems or la bamba either.

I think I was pretty close to getting my money's worth. GLC were a good big name to get, and must be worth 15 quid, and when you factor in the food, drink, rides and everything else then it gets very close to a £70 bundle.

I enjoyed it.

i didnt go this year but 2 things to say:

1. well done to the KK for organising it relatively smoothly from what ive read. If the main problem was a long queue for a crepe, then its a sign the important factors ran smoothly.
If a long queue for getting a crepe ruins your night, then you need to get a grip. The transport, booze, hours of boozing, music all seemed good (although i wouldnt choose GLC for an end of year ball).

2. i would definitely say there should be VIP tickets. As a previous poster said, there should be a ball half the numbers and double the price. Id happily pay £150 for a much more extravagent ball. Ive got a half decent friend at Cambridge who organises the lighting at the Kings College Ball there and the amount of time and effort put in is incredible; just for the lighting. Im not doubting a huge effort wasnt made this year, im sure it was, just saying Cambridge does it on a much bigger scale (maybe becuase they have a greater team working on it, not just designating it to one person). And yes, they have to pay around £200 from memory. Its not massive amount given it should be the biggest night of your year.

I think with only setting one price at £70, it makes it 'another big night' rather than 'the end of year ball'. It would be more prestigious if it was more overwhelming which would mean it would be more expensive.

I can back that up: once I found the beer bar it was my new best friend. Every time I went there was no queue at all

I really enjoyed the ball, I have never been before (I decided to wait for my final year) so I can't compare it to previous ones. I had plenty of drink, lots to eat (pancakes, those yummy chicken and vegetable wraps, and sausage burgers), and I was pleasantly suprised by how good GLC were. They really got the crowd going and were a great live act.

The queues weren't bad at all, the only really large one was the pancake stand at the beginning of the evening. It really quietened up by the end of the evening though.

My only problem with the ball at all (I thought it was very well organised) was the DJ- he was shit and kept playing all this rubbishy stuff intermittent with a few good songs. I danced my shoes off nontheless though, I love dancing, we keep yelling "The DJ is shit" in hope that he would hear us and play some good tunes lol.

By the way, if the girl who lost the pretty yellow floral clutch bag is reading this, I gave in your purse into Lost Property, I hope you got it back

I had a great time this year, and I don't know anyone who went who had a bad or even mediocre time. Last year was pretty crap (I think we can all agree on that), and 2003 was great, but I really enjoyed myself this year. I think having the bar outside in a tent was a great idea because it really did make it so much easier to move around (which was th emost annoying part of the 2003 ball, for me). The rain wasn't great, but no one's fault and not really a big deal as there was an inside bar (although with a longer line) and indoor bathrooms. The only things I would have changed were getting rid of the sangria bar because that was disgusting, a bit more pop music to dance around to, and the staggered bus times. The different departure times was stupid--not everyone buys tickets with friends, so my group of friends ended up with such a range of departure times that we took a taxi up to Kinkell farm. I don't see anything wrong with people getting on buses on a first come, first serve basis. If they wanted staggered times, maybe they should have done more levels, like they had before.

But, overall, I thought it was a great night, and can't wait for next year. It seems like most of the criticism on this thread has come from people who "heard it was crap" but who hadn't actually gone. It was a great night, and I hope it's as good next year, though maybe with another champagne reception at the castle next year because that was the best part of the ball last year.

Of all the clubs to pick on, they're probably the worst for your case... aside from the all-male thing (which is their right to do) their events are fun, they don't have a political agenda, and they don't bother anyone.

2) Stop whining about the price, too: when you all grow up, if you should be invited to charity events, you pay a large sum up-front (£70 is a pittance) and the same thing happens... they feed you, keep you drunk, and give you entertainment. It's a good format that works and prevents people from losing their wallets.

3) You are tearing down an organisation that actually DOES do charity work, Ryder, so I suggest you keep your trap shut before you end up on the libel train. When that thing comes to town, it doesn't make any stops.

What does some of this work entail?

It's not that the events aren't enjoyable because the KK run them - I just don't want to spend time with such pretentious and self-important people, or people sympathetic to them and their ideas.

It's more what the KK stand for than who they are as individuals that pisses me off - especailly when they think they are the Gods of st.andrews.

I don't think i talked to a pretentious and self-important person once at the ball - i was there with my friends to have a good time and that's what the KK provided.

To be honest, with the ball, they're offering a service for a cost and if they provide that service then i'm not really all that bothered about how pretentious and self-important the KK might feel themselves to be.

And whatever you might feel it is that they stand for that's so damn terrible, it hasn't affected my life in st andrews to any extent so i don't see why you feel the need to be so argumentative over them. Have the KK really influenced your life here that much? I doubt it.
