BBC Proms 2006

Postby Steveo on Wed May 10, 2006 11:15 pm

With only 64 days to go before the start of the greatest classical music festival in the world, I was wondering:

Who else out there loves the Proms?

Is anyone planning on attending any of the proms?

Anyone planning LNOTP parties?

I can't wait, the Proms, and especially the last night is one of the highlights of my summer.

Hyde Park does seem incredibly tempting. It's unlikely I could attend the requisite number of proms now, and still be successful in the ballot...

But I'd love to be there, to be honest, for LNOTP. I've not missed one since I was 10 on the telly

I'll be there, can't remember what night though. My bloke plays flute and piccolo in the National Youth Orchestra, so I'm off for the night that they're playing.

Really should sort out getting some tickets, really...

I believe tickets are allocated after application which opens on 15th May - I think.

I shall be hoping for Prom in the Park in Manchester and some Bach at the Albert Hall would do me nicely ta very much.

Woo! Proms! Still got last year's last night on the old betamax. They should do a prom in the park in Edinburgh, none of this Glasgow nonsense, I *really* don't want to have to go through there for it.

I will definitely be booking my six tickets for the proms to get a ticket for the last night!! Will especially be going to the prom on 5th August, as this was the first date of my boyfriend and I last year!! I went to two last year, and they were fabulous! I would urge everyone to go...even if they aren't really that into classical music, that's the point...promming only costs around £5, and the more expensive seats aren't that pricey either...it's well worth it! The atmosphere is unlike no other... I hope everyone who goes, or watches, or listens, enjoys them!!

I went to the proms when they were in Salibury a few years back - was a fantastic night. Quite fancy going again this year, unfortunately I don't know many people from the North West who appear to share my passion!

Ahh the BBC proms, the highlight of my year!

Can't wait for them to start - went to the last night last year for the first time and it was incredible! The atmosphere is like second to nothing, I can't recommend it enough.

I think I'll go and procastinate looking at the BBC proms website and see which 6 concerts to get tickets for.

Whimsical though the last night is, it has not been the same since Sir Andrew Davis left.

I'm hoping it will be better now that Leonard "P.C." Slatkin is no longer at the helm.

I did like that they have returned the fanfares to the Fantasia on British Sea Songs, but I wasn't happy with the "regionalising" of it by throwing in Scottish, Irish and Welsh ditties. The whole point is that it is a fantasia on British Sea Songs. Do it proper and do it right, then if the BBC want to add some regionalism, commision a Fantasia on British Folk Songs. Infact, screw that, just resurrect the UK Theme that Radio 4 unspeakably saw fit to axe.

And bring back Rule Britannia!

I don't get all the messing with the LNOTP, the whole point (imho) is that it is an over the top celebration of crazy British pomp, it won't appeal to the nationalist or P.C. type no matter how many "Danny Boy"s you throw in or lines you censor from Rule Britannia. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, all that happens is that it is spoiled for those of us who do appreciate the format.
