When did you discover you were straight?

Postby Anon. on Sat Jul 01, 2006 9:10 pm

I was watching Big Brother yesterday evening (yes, I know it's not fashionable to like it, just SHUT UP) and the Irish bloke was asking the Mancunian bloke when he discovered he was gay - his response being to ask when the other bloke discovered he was straight. I thought that was rather good, and it made me think.

After some reflection, I think in my case it was possibly around five but more likely around ten/eleven. What do other people think? When did you work out whom you are attracted to? Is it pretty much just at the same time as one enters puberty? That would make sense, anyway.

Wasn't puberty for me.

I remember having little 'girlfriends' and playing things like Kiss Chase with girls when I was around 4-5 years old.

I think you're just born a certain way.

As for being born a certain way, the BBC would appear to agree with you

I pretty much knew i was straight from when i was tiny, but the moment i could say that i was definately straight was when i kissed a girl drunkenly and thought 'hmmm well this isnt utterly awful but its pretty yuck and does absolutely nothing for me' i guess trying something out made me 100% sure ;)

When I was a toddler I saw a scantilly-clad woman and something magical happened in my trousers.

The thing is, it's not really so straightforward as to realise you are gay as to 'realise' you are straight. It's not like you're going against the norm if you're a girl who likes boys, and vice versa. The story of how a homosexual came to realise they were homosexual is presumably more interesting than a heterosexual expounding on the finer details of how they ended up as the majority of people. Actually maybe they're both equally boring. Nevermind.

Incidentally, I discovered I was straight when I became attracted to the opposite sex and not to my own.

Fascinating.

I do believe that people's sexuality is determined prior to birth, but I don't honestly believe that it manifests itself before puberty - the 'kiss chase' boy/girl connection probably owes more to prevailing norms than sexuality, and I'm sure you'd find plenty of people who turned out to be gay who had similar experiences.

Me, I realised I was straight in about P7, just after I'd hit puberty. I had a male friend whom I regarded as really cool and interesting, and having not long before learned of homosexuality as a concept, contemplated (serious child that I was) whether my feelings for him might have been beyond platonic. It was soon after that that I realised that actually, no, I wasn't attracted to him sexually after all - he was (I hesitate to say 'just') a good friend - and that I'd never be sexually attracted to any other male either. And that was it.

Hey now, I hope you're not talking about me. As I recall, you think I have very nice lips.

Thank you - I now have cereal sprayed all over my desk from laughing at an inappropriate moment.

Men discover heterosexuality at about the same time as they discover boobs.

Looking back the first signs of my hetrosexuality was when I was about two - Han Solo was my everything at that age, I wanted to be Princess Lea just so I could be with him.

I became aware of the sexual nature of my attraction to men when I was around 12. I used to fancy girls, until I was about 15 or 16, but my first ever vaguely erotic dream (aged 5) involved a man.

I was six. I had just started kindergarten and found girls to be exotic and alluring creatures.
