Robbie Williams - Rudebox

Postby pea on Tue Oct 24, 2006 3:42 pm

Being the crazy fangirl that I am, I was very excited when it arrived in the post yesterday and have been listening to it ever since. Just wondering if anyone else has it or has heard it and what they think? I am expecting a backlash of "He's a cocky, arrogant prick" but it'd be nice to know someone else out there loves him as much as me!

How about: there is lots of much better, less bland music out there, and you're not a kid any more?

She asked what you thought of Robbie, not of his fans. Don't be such a bloody snob about music. People like what they like. Deal.

What did I say about his fans? I'm not going to stop people liking whatever they want to, but that doesn't mean I can't be snobby about it. There's so many talented artists out there, it seems so lazy to buy in to the talentless over-produced mass-marketed chart types.

Give me any Robbie/chart song, and I'll give you several artists who do the same sort of music but much much better. And that doesn't even include the artists who are unique and original, which is often where the real genius is.

Bryn, why are you presuming that all pea likes is Robbie Williams?

I'm sure she'll have a far more diverse taste in music that will include artists with that little bit of 'genius'.

When it comes to music, it's best not to be too serious- if you like something, you like it, however cheesy or hackneyed it may be.

Why are you all being so puritanical? I bet you've all gone "Ugh, why do you like HER/HIM/THEM???" in your time.

Bryn, if you care to look at my LastFm - http://www.last.fm/user/GeoRho/ - then I'm sure you'll find plenty of artists I like that you also like. Judging me based on one out of the many and varied artists I like is narrowminded and childish. Silly me for expecting a sensible discussion about an album rather than blatent arrogance and music elitism.

I love Robbie Williams. He is, I think, a genius.
If you don't like him, go see him live and see if he changes your mind.

From what I saw, Pea asked for comments about Robbie William's Rudebox, and Bryn replied with his comment on Robbie Williams' music in general.

No mention was made of other music in Pea's collection, nor of Robbie's other fans.

Let's read what people write, and not what we think they mean, shall we?

Pea has great taste in music. I personally don't like Robbie because I am a staunch Gary fangirl. LOL.

And besides, I have gone "urgh" to people's music tastes, but usually in jest. The only thing GUARANTEED to make me lost respect is possession of "Lady In Red".

Anyway, trying to be a Robbie hater doesn't work, some of his songs are too damn catchy :)

Bryn said "there is lots of much better, less bland music out there" making a sweeping generalisation that all I like is Robbie Williams and therefore (in his opinion) bland music.

He also said "and you're not a kid any more?" indicating that you must be a child to like Robbie's music, and therefore all his fans are kids.

Regardless of whatever music he produces, he's still a self-satisfied conceited twat. (Yes yes, so am I. I know. Boo the Williams hater.)

I don't see how that is a generalisation that all you like is Robbie Williams? It's just a statement saying why listen to Robbie when you can listen to something better, I don't see the part about that's all you listen to.

Because better is subjective. Duh. I like Robbie, I like Scissor Sisters. I like Pink Floyd. I like Metallica. I like Iron Maiden. I like Sunn O))), Lordi, Nile and more. I like bands you've never heard of and the same probably goes both ways.

However There's no shame in likeing decent pop music, people shouldn't act like pop is a dirty word. It's popular for a reason (and no not because people are "idiots" or "it's mass produced flavourless shite". Get you head out your arseholes) usually because it's got a catchy melody and is fun to sing and dance to. And music should be fun, right? At least, you should enjoy listening to it.
