Union vs Library, what's the problems with them?

Seriously, what do folks actually feel could be made better about each, and what really should be top priority?

For myself...I quite like the Union. Not exactly top knotch stuff, but when it comes to it I don't know where I myself would choose to improve it!

The same largely applies to the library, except that I'd prefer better seats in the smaller study-booths, as they aren't the comfiest!

What about the rest of the Sinners out there?

St Andrews might need a multi-storey carpark during the summer so the library could be restored to its original architectural design function; rather than a multi-storey carpark with windows, carpets, furniture and books, attempting to pass itself off as a library - no one was fooled 30 years ago no one is fooled now.

I like the library's architecture. In the right light. I do think it's out of place in its surroundings. The Union is just dire.

I don’t find the library that bad personally as it is hidden off street and therefore not as offensive as the union, hellville or the old DRH.

About a week ago the BBC did a spot on the New Towns that were built in the 50s and 60s. I found it hilarious to see the architect who built Harlow arguing that the soulless concrete wilderness he created was a masterpiece which had been ruined later on by bad council planning.

The problem is that you can’t rejuvenate these places, they are just too hideous and should never have been built in the first place. The tragedy is that most of our towns and cities have been irreparably scarred by brutalist monstrosities. We came to our senses eventually but much damage was done in the interim.

I don't care so much about the looks of the library - although at my highschool we had a beautiful wood-panelled one and I wish ours could be that way - so much as the lack of books. We need more books on certain subjects. I would also like a fiction section.

In my last weeks as a magistrand, I lamented that I hadn't spent as much time in the library as I should have done; I developed an affection for it.

Even though the carpets are putrid, the lighting is depressing, the chairs are uncomfortable and it looks hideous from the outside (and, almost like the TARDIS, manages to be more hideous on the inside) I liked it.

Library > Union.

The library does have fiction. Try browsing around the classmark PR6069.

I spoke with the librarian recently. There is a £15 million library investment program currently being drafted. This will be done over the course of a few years, and will potentially involve expansion into the old crawford arts building, resulting in a 25%-30% increase in floor space. A huge number of infrequently-accessed books will be moved to a storage centre on the North Haugh, resulting in even more study space. The library will likely be shut for a 6 month period, but thats what you need to do if you want to make something better. The current thought on the closing would be June->December in 2 years time. The plans will likely evolve and change, but thats the current thinking.

I think that architects like to go crazy with their creativity and create builings which look fashionable in their time but look terrible nowadays e.g. the schools built in 60s architecture all over fife may have looked modern when they were built but now look dated.

However buildings which are built in "period style" (e.g victorian or georgian buildings in edinburgh) don't seem to goout of fashion so thus any new buildings added to the university should not be built to look modern.
