Comic Relief Bop SCANDAL!

Postby Guest on Fri Mar 16, 2007 10:15 am

After being really excited about going to the bop tonight I found out that NONE of the money from bop bands is actually going to Comic Relief!!

You would have thought that the union could have donated at least some of the bop band money to Comic Relief after advertising this event with pictures of red noses and the name 'Comic Relief' which is actually a trademark.

YOUR BOP BAND MONEY IS NOT GOING TO THE COMIC RELIEF CHARITY!!!

Does everyone else feel like they have been misled?!

If this is true then it is not really on. If for nothing else, using the trademark to advertise it is probably illegal.

I have also heard this rumour, and I notice that no where on the posters does it say that any of the money is going to Comic Relief.

Incidentally, isn't playing the CR broadcast in the bop is tantamount to charging people to watch the program in public? Surely that is illegal.

Is the Union trying to get sued?

Doubt it, just the same as venue that charges entry showing live football.

I know you need a special license/authorisation to charge entry to broadcast something publicly, my point was that if the Union isn't giving the money to CR, as has been alleged, I am dubious that they would attained this permission.

No doubt they'll be collecting for Comig Relief... but there's a problem with charity law in giving some of the bop band money to another charity, since the union itself is supposed to be a charity.

Well, the bop isn't more expensive than usual. Usually when there's a charity bop, it'll be £4 instead of £3.50, or something. I believe there will be collections in the union.

I definitely feel as if the Bop has been falsely advertised. Just think if someone actually mentioned it to the Comic Relief people, they could probably be sued!

I hope people will choose not to go to this Bop as its misleading and unfair to the actual Comic Relief charity. Its as if I had a lemonade stand, for 3 pounds a go, said it was all going to Breast Cancer Research (pink lemonade of course, with free pink ribbon pins with purchase) and then pocketed all the money once I was done.

Whoever organized this and thought it was morally, nevermind legally, okay should be ashamed of themselves.

I know where I won't be this evening.

Well that is an incorrect analogy seeing as someone just said that nowhere on the advertising did it say ANY of the money from the bop bands was going to Comic Relief.

To be honest, if the Union is advertising it as a Comic Relief bop you can hardly be surprised that people think that money will be going to this charity, can you?

This is different though... this is a charity campaign.! Its kind of sick to charge money to watch pictures of people who are desperately trying to raise money for charity and then not hand over that money. I'm quite surprised the union has done this!

Really?! Thats awful! Has this been confirmed? Surely this is false advertising!

Maybe I'll just stay at home and send in the £3.50 to comic relief so that it can actually help the people in Africa and the UK rather than the union!

Perhaps it would be pertinent to wait until someone in the know makes an explination, rather than getting fired up about what is in effect an unsubstantiated rumour!

Oh for the days last year when someone would make a comment, the whole board would jump up in arms, only for Ben Reiley to turn up and patiently explain that the whole thing was bullshit!

According to the poster at http://www.yourunion.net/events/index.php?page=event&event_id=7402:

- 57p of each Text the DJ message goes to Comic Relief
- All proceeds from the cloakroom go to Comic Relief

Nowhere does it say that money from entry (which is the standard £3.50) is going to Comic Relief - just that it's themed as a Comic Relief bop. I'm sure there will be buckets if you'd wish to make a contribution separately.

The newly re-affiliated ComedySoc(k) will be aiding the union in collecting money for comic relief in the bop, main bar and cloakroom- fear not!!

I also find it slightly suspect that neither the Charities Campaign nor SVS has their logo on the posters...are they even involved?

To be fair, neither of those groups seems to be coming up with their own fundraisers for Comic Relief anyway.

I can't comment on the bop itself (been a little busy this week...) but the Charities Campaign will be out in force on the streets of St Andrews and Dundee tomorrow with collecting tins for Comic Relief. Oh, and if you voted today you might have picked up a red nose 'I've Voted' badge - money from that, which Charities organised, went to Comic Relief.

Actually we were told by the DoES back in November that there would be no more charity bops. We were rather surprised by all of this.

As Lee has mentioned we are running a large collection and selling 'I've Voted' badges instead.

The other aspect here is that we usually only run events for our five nominated charities; this year Barnardo's, Macmillan, SVS, Oxfam and Homestart.
