Is it me, or were there rather a lot of spoiled votes?

I think that is down to Facebook again - some people vote because they don't like running the Gauntlet and RON people or spoil their votes. With the added annoyance of the Facebook invites, I think more people were inclined to show their general dislike of the process. Which is fair enough, at least they used their vote in some way.

I think also that a lot of people only cast a single vote for the big positions (i.e. put a tick next to their choice of DoR/Pres/DoES) and left the rest of the form blank - i.e. a spoil for any of the other jobs on the form and for any redistributions of the vote.

Will has it right. The number of people who only vote for the sabb positions is usually very high and, as there is usually one sabb position per ballot paper, you end up with a number of positions that are just left blank.

On another note, Cecil the Teddybear only received 17 votes to RON's 24 in the Presidential. Poor cecil.

From the positions that David mentions, excluding performing arts and pres., none seem to have been a one horse race, which is nice to see.

Since you mention it, those races didn't appear to be anything like as decisive at the polls as the results would suggest. I thought Tom was probably going to win, but by a nose after several redistributions - no offence to any former candidates, but Ben Nicholson was a far stronger opponent than anyone Tom beat last year, and he'd put together an excellent campaign. As for performing arts, I was campaigning for Isabelle throughout the morning and a little in the afternoon, but if I had called it for anyone it would have been Dan.

To answer your other question, no, no unopposed candidate lost. the closest we've ever had to a RON victory was in the 2002 general when Neil Walker, a candidate for E and E who, shall I say, had a set of credentials for the job that many at the time regarded as dubious, and became the focus of an active and vocal RON campaign. Since then RON campaigns against specific individuals or positions have been outlawed.

Ah, if only the electorate paid the slightest bit of attention to the relative strengths and merits of the candidates, logic may have had its day.

Thanks Bean!

But, Tom has clearly proved himself this year whereas last year he was a more unknown quantity.

He did very well last year, and this year there wasn't really anyone to his right, whereas as Nicolson found being to the left (even if only in people's heads) is rather dangerous in centre right St Andrews.

This is only a guess, I think running again unless you've done a bad job is usually good for name recognition.

In a similar vein: Would it be unfair to say that neither Ben nor Tom were actually a bad choice in the system? As far as I could distinguish: both seemed excellent candidates, though I had the sneaking suspicion Tom would pip Ben to the post so to speak, but I still didn't let the majority sway my vote!), I was quite suprised to see just so many people go for Tom over Ben? Was he really *that* much more an appealing candidate?

(As said though, I would have been happy to see either of them 'in office', but I had to [well: I wanted to] vote...)

Otherwise, however, it seems like a fairly decent set of election results.

I was surprised by that, too. Along similar lines, I could hardly believe it when I saw how many votes Lee got. Granted that he ran as a "non-serious" candidate without any campaigning whatsoever and a joke for 100 words, I find it hard that this many people would *not* have either mistaken posts and assumed he was trying to be re-elected as DOSDA, or just ticked the box with the name they knew the most.
Congratulation on getting that many votes in the first place, of course, and if so many people chose Lee because they were unhappy with both the other candidates, then that should have been it (and I'm sure Lee would have done a great job, too.)
I just think that these elections brought out rather clearly that the Sabbs were quite successfull in promoting their work to the general student body this year - at least the students know them ;) .

I think that the reason people here are surprised at the extent of Tom's win is that most of us have been following this election, or were candidates, and therefore knew the strengths of previously relatively unknown candidates like Ben. I would argue that Ben might have actually been a better AP.

However, I suspect that a large part of the vote is determined purely by name recognition. Most people know who Tom d'Ardenne is, they know he's doing the job already, and they've either heard good things about him or, at the least, they haven't heard anything bad.

A lot of people I spoke to simply hadn't heard of Ben until the election, and I think that's a problem faced by anyone running against an incumbent in Association elections, regardless of how much they've done in their previous positions.

A lot has been achieved lately in terms of bridging the gap between the general student population and their representatives (no doubt both Tom and Ben have played their part in this change), and this is reflected by the record turnout in these elections. But ideally, we'd have a system whereby students know who their representatives are and what they're doing for them throughout the year, and I don't think we're quite at that stage yet. Perhaps if this were the case, the results would have been a great deal closer.

Also, have a read of Tom's 100 words:

Experience. I’ve done the job. I know how it works, I know the right people, I get things done. Lots done. We have been trying to create a strategic plan for seventeen years – I made it happen. Now I want to realise it. I intend to get £5 million pounds from the University and create an alumni publication to help raise a further £1 million pounds. I also intend to double the University grant to help all our societies immediately. I will fight for your rights and continue to be the best President you have ever had.

I think it may have actually been impossible for the other candidates to improve on that.

Firstly, in reply to Freaker, I would like to say a lovely big thanks. I was a non-serious candidate, in that I know I would have done a really good job with it, but at the same time, I knew how much Steve wanted it, how good he will be at it, and I also knew how much I wanted a real job. I was amazed at how many votes I got, and I can only thank the voters for that. Oh, and thanks especially to the 46 extra who didn't vote for me! I know Steve will do a really good job, he has an excellent team around him, and I, for one, am thrilled that the Association will be in such good hands this year.

Now, Tom and Ben. As one of Tom's campaign managers I was amazed at the result. I honestly thought it was going to be a lot closer than what it turned out to be. Ben is well known, or at least I thought he was, but at the end of the day, Tom has been doing the job for the best part of a year, and he has been doing it so very well. Contrary to what Steveo thinks, I believe Tom has been the best president we have ever had (though, I was a big fan of Dana)and he has really helped in getting the Association to somewhere much closer to the general student body. [James] is right, we're not there yet, but we're a lot closer to it than we were this time last year. Imagine where we are going to be a year from now...

As I've said before, I am over the moon with these elections results, and, while I was a non-serious candidate, and I really do think another year in this town would totally break me, I am a little jealous that I wont get the opportunity to work with Jenny and Rich, two people who have such passion and drive for what they have been elected to do, that I know they are going to make the services side of the Association incredible over the next year.

Results

Postby enola48 on Mon Mar 19, 2007 6:22 pm

I have been wrestling with these results all weekend in between getting some much needed sleep.

The winners names have been on the union website since 5.30am on Saturday morning.

The full results are now available in hard copy on the board in the General Office and in thE foyer of the union. Technology hates me so I will not attempt to upload them to anything but will leave it to someone who knows what they are doing.

Yeah, I just typed the wrong number for that one. Sorry about that, but it wasn't bad for someone who was barely awake. Plus, I was using my academic daughter's computer with its weird ass French keyboard.

On the Tom/Ben thing, yes, name recognition must have played a big part, though you can hardly accuse Ben of hiding his light under a bushel for the past three years. I also think the text of Tom's 100 Words is very interesting: note that he says he's the best "you've ever had", which is different from saying that he's the best ever, and therefore technically probably correct for most people (with the possible exception of Dickie). Excluding Tom, the best in the past few years must have been Derek, and it's hard to call one over the other given the different circumstances prevailing at the time (particularly the rent crisis under Derek).
